Deer down! My Bro in Law, nephew and I hunted the crazy snowstorm in LaPorte over the weekend. Saturday was wicked, wet, windy and the deer were moving. Packin' my Vaquero, loaded with some of my handloaded 45 Colts had me pumped and ready for action. My main problem was trying to keep my glasses clean enough to see as the wind gusts and snow squalls made for a crazy time. We did some stand hunting, some still and some drives. Ended up dropping a lil 5 point forky and a doe, practically in their tracks. Happy, happy, happy with the way the wheel gun announced her presence, I was pretty excited to actually shoot deer with rounds I had loaded. So the Vaquero went from this: to this: And then we went out again Sunday morning as if we hadn't taken enough punishment the day before, we felt we needed to go out and freeze our faces off again! We jumped deer out of their beds and moved a few more but nobody pulled a trigger today. On the way back to my parents for a hot cup of coffee, I shot this pic as I was cruising out of town:

Why do you pack em out without field dressing? I just headed to different area of the farm and gut them there. It gets the mess away from the hunting area but near a shed in case we have a chance to bust a coyote over the pile a little later.

I take mine home and gut them hanging up. Unless, it is a ways or will be awhile like during a draw hunt. Hey that Door Prairie barn is close to home!

Congratulations highcottonguide How far can a pistol like that drop a deer, I have absolutely no experience with a pistol at all. Regards Billy I pretty much limit my shots to around 20 yards or similar to bow range. I've heard other guys say they are good to farther shots but I'm not that confident in my marksmanship! Through the years, I've taken most deer with my muzzleloader and can't see much past the smoke a little while. For me, there is something pretty amazing about taking a good size game animal with a handgun where I can actually see the impact!

What bullet you using in that 45LC? After practicing with different rounds (mainly hollow point) like the Hornady FTX and XTP bullets, I found that I just wasn't very accurate with these rounds which were around 1,000 fps. I read an article online about Elmer Keith and some of his cowboy action loads and really liked what I was reading about his semi wadcutter and lead flat point data. I ran the info by Andrew at Profire because I feel more confident with an experts opinion. After experimenting some, I found that the Elmer Keith loads worked amazingly on for me. The first practice, at 7 yards, I had 3 holes touching out of 6 rounds and then was consistently <2" groups. I settled on 255 grain lead flat points cast by a friend in Martinsville. Another old farmer friend from Wanatah had been saving his Winchester brass and gave me 500 cases. These are loaded over 5.5 grains of Titegroup with a C.O.L. of 1.57". Velocity is a bit under 850 fps. I picked up a factory crimp die and I think this has a little to do with the accuracy, also. I've always felt that it's better to know my point of impact so I'm not as concerned with high power loads! I used to shoot rounds like this and give little thought to their design, contruction, and so forth. Now, I analyze my handloads for hours and consider them a work of art which seems a bit silly...but hey, it keeps me off the streets and out of the bars!!! FWIW, here is a pic of one of my rounds:

Looks like a very nice hand load. I like titegroup, use it in my 44 mag. Those look like they would run in my lever gun real nice.
