Okay guys so I went back today in the rain with my dog. I found the arrow and was wondering what this was on the shaft? Looks like maybe a gut shot by looking at the veins. I went to last blood and looked all around. Dog did her best but rain had done a number on the track and my dog. Checked a bunch of blow downs and the water sources to know avail. I hope to get pics of him soon alive. The neighbor who gave me permission to track said he would keep an eye out for him as he will be hunting this weekend for the first time this season in that area. He also said he would call if he showed up on his cameras. I hope and pray he made it. Any opinions on the hit by looking at my pictures? Thanks.

Fat. Lots of shot exits could possibly look like that.

So seeing this would you guess a high or a low chance of survival?

Wouldn't venture a guess either way....its all determined by what it hit on the inside not on what it came out through.
Deer are incredibly tough critters though ....

Very watery blood and not heavy at all away from the shot site. Also a clear fluid that was found near blood spots along the track. I've never seen that.

He was broadside at 20 yards. I thought I hit him good. Maybe low? I heard a thud that sounded hollow.

Low still gets heart usually. I would guess forward of where you thought through the brisket area. If that's the case the deer will live.

Well that is slightly encouraging. Still don't like wounding a deer. Won't be out until again until I have regained my confidence.

I would say he was hit low in the brisket. There is a lot of fat in that area and that is what is on the arrrow shaft so you may have not penetrated the chest cavity. He has a good chance of survivng.

Confidence is best regained by killing one....

Swilk I couldn't agree more. But first I'll practice tomorrow if it's not raining and make sure everything is on. I'm guessing I messed the shot up and hopefully I won't have to make too many adjustments.

I really, really like the lighted nocks. They allow you to see your arrow a LOT easier, and makes recovering the arrow a lot easier too.

Hollow sound like hitting a drum? with a rifle that is definatley a gut shot deer, you shold be able to smell it though. No idea what that is on the arrow no experience of arrows gone through animals. regaards Billy

My experience, you're going to get fat no matter what shot you take on a deer. I've double lunged them and had a shaft covered in blood. Matter of fact I don't think, after drying, I've not had a fat covered shaft. Hollow or crack sound? Could be a shoulder shot. High above the vitals and below the spine. How much penetration did you get? Hollow sound though would lead me to say gut shot.

Smell the arrow, that will tell you if it was a gut shot. The next step after hitting a deer is see what color the hair is. These two steps will tell a lot about the shot.
