I'm heading to Big Oaks this Sunday and Monday. If we should get lucky and bag something I'm trying to plan ahead. I see Pate Processing is part of hunters feeding the hungry program but the aren't open On Sundays and appear to be an 8-5 operation. Haven't been able to contact them yet to see if the have an after hours drop. I did find the Napoleon locker plant has a drop and is a donation site but they are 26 miles north which would be fine on Monday but would prefer not to have to go that far on Sunday if possible. Is there any place to leave one overnight near Madison or donate one after hours? If there was a place to quarter one out I could it get it in a cooler but I doubt I could do that at the motel.  |

I wanna say they'll have a truck there for the donation program. If I remember right it was there last year. Also they have a flyer on the door with some local places that take them.

Why shoot it if your not going to eat it??? There's not abundance of deer there anyways! The hunts there are not reduction hunts like state parks are.
A Good buck I could understand..... not trying to beat you up just stating my opinion and advise!

I will shoot what I want and if I don't eat it it will go to good use. Or I may just let it walk. I will not pass up a large buck though.

Why shoot it if your not going to eat it??? There's not abundance of deer there anyways! The hunts there are not reduction hunts like state parks are. A Good buck I could understand..... not trying to beat you up just stating my opinion and advise! so you could understand shooting a big buck and donating it but not a doe? |

Haha.. I actually figure on quartering mine if I get one on the 14/15 hunt. Might get some odd looks if I'm doing it in a Wal-Mart parking lot, wouldn't stop me though.
If you get one early enough on day 1, you can take it back to the office for check-in then quarter it there at the refuge.

My opinion is that your statement makes as much sense as saying its OK to trophy hunt as long as you keep the antlers but that's merely my opinion Regardless of reduction hun or not If your goal is.donation is it more ethical to donate a big buck or a doe |

I assumed so. I'd take it back to the hunt area to do the quartering. I've only been there once and didn't think to ask.
Worst case, the scraps stink up the back of your truck, but the meat is good in your cooler.

I guess I'm with Gregg on this one to a point but why shoot ANY if you aren't going to eat it. At that point it becomes killing just to kill nothing else. Just to say I killed a deer. If you don't need a deer don't go or don't shoot. I flat out hate the hunter feeding the hungry programs. It pushes the kill to kill mentality. Donate that money you pay for the license to the program. It'll go alot farther. Shooting one and giving it directly to a person IMO is different.
Reduction hunts I don't view any different. If you aren't going to use it personally don't kill it. There are many that would go to these hunts and use the deer themselves. Why use your spot up to shoot a deer just to shoot it? There are plenty of other hunters that would gladly take your spot and be happy with the meat they would get.

IMO nothing wrong with taking any animal and donating it. Hunting is a sport and to get better at anything takes practice. Not just killing practice but the whole adventure. Locating the deer, getting them in range, and yes finishing. Weather it is called reduction hunt or not the reason we are allowed to hunt is to reduce the population for many reasons. If you feel bad for doing it you don't have to but not everyone has the same reasons.

I'm sorry I asked the question. By the way, I am pretty much out of deer meat and could use one but I'm worried about the temps and getting one home. I have never donated to the hoosiers feeding the hungry program but I believe it's a better way of providing food for people over welfare. Last year my family got 5 deer and gave 2 of them to needy families and one to the landowner.

Hey 10point, do what you think you should do and who cares what everyone else thinks! I sometimes order a large French fry at McDonalds and only eat half of it. Maybe I shouldn't go to McDonalds if I don't plan to eat all my supper.
There's not a dang thing wrong with giving it to someone who needs it worse than you!

I'm sure there are some guys on here from that area who may know someone that would like a deer. Our church started a donation program for deer several years ago. Just drop it off and they took it to the processor no charge and distributed the meat in our area. There are needy people who would love it. Not a thing wrong with donating it. Go hunt.

There is a guy up the road in Vernon that takes donations for his church. He is a processor.

My Friend Ken Has been setting up at BOK and helping with the program him or someone should be there .he has a list of processers for here or ones in your county for more local donations if you prefer that. We just talked about this .
