A message from OA to the Youth:
To the youth, may you have many a year ahead of you to learn of this great sport and may you be blessed in your adventures. May the good Lord watch over you and those around you. May He also provide you with abundant opportunity in your years to come. This sport is what our ancestors survived on, but it wasn't a sport then. It was purely survival. For hundreds of years, people having been relying on hunters and farmers to provide for them. In this modernized society we live in, the hunter is not heavily relied on. And by some is frowned upon. But we as the hunters, band together and provide for many through our donations to charity organizations.
Some of you have been around hunting your whole life and have had endless guidance from family and friends. To those of you that have that wonderful opportunity I ask that you too some day share that knowledge with a young one. Share the knowledge that was passed down to you from your father or grandfather, mother or grandmother, or whomever it may have been. Show someone the ropes and be a role model in the way you go about not only your daily life, but about the way you hunt and fish. The way you learned to scout and the signs you look for. Be that positive influence that so many young ones these days are deprived of.
And to those of you who don't have anyone that showed you the ropes. You're not alone! I didn't grow up around hunting. My father nor my grandfather were hunters. My closest relative that hunted was my uncle but he has since passed on. I didn't get into hunting until I was 17 years old. And even to some here that is an early start. So don't feel like you're behind in learning this great sport. With the help of people here on this great forum, nothing will be impossible for you. Everything you need to know about hunting deer and turkey and anything else you can imagine can be harnessed by listening to what these highly insightful, highly experienced people have to say. Find a friend at home that is interested in it and learn together. You have so many memories ahead of you to make. So take the time to make all that you can.
And to those of you who are older and know the ropes, be that positive influence. Take a youngster out with you when you hunt and let them experience everything they can. Take them on a hunt and let them get their first deer. Let them shoot their first turkey. These are memories that will last them a lifetime and they are the positive influence our young society needs these days. With your infinite wisdom in the sport, and their itch to learn it, we can better shape not only our next generation of hunters, but our next generation of fathers and mothers. Make it a point to take them with you this year and share those memories with you. Give them the information they need to be able to pass on to their young in years to come.
I truly hope that everyone that wants to get into this sport gets that opportunity because it's one of the greatest things that I have ever done for myself and I can't imagine not being a hunter anymore. Becoming a hunter has taught me so much more about myself than I would have ever realized before. I ask that you do all of this within the laws of the state/county you hunt. Teach them right from wrong and that even if you could have got one but didn't because of laws that are set into place it's ok. because you will be rewarded eventually with a legal opportunity. Be a hunter that follows the regulations and a hunter that emphasizes the importance of said regulations.
Be a positive influence. Be a role model. Be a teacher. Be a guide. Be a HUNTER.
