It's a heavy log, completely unwieldy, cumbersome, dangerous to shoot lump of wood, carbon, and string. Shot my dad's tonite. No, its not a bow. It's a heck of alot worse. Hats off to anyone that uses one. Don't see how you handle it in a tree stand and sure as heck can't see how ya all still have all your fingers.

No, its not a bow, its a high power rifle... Thats according to so many around my circle. They have no clue. I have two now, just dont have time to stay good with vertical anymore with a family. They are different and take some getting used to for sure. To each his own.

I like my crossbow for use in a ground blind or tripod stand....In a tree, I'd just as soon use a compound....
FWIW, I don't get into discussions over whether it's a bow or not as I don't see the point or care to do so. It's legal and another piece of equipment that I enjoy hunting with.
Enjoy your evening....

Yeah, I didn't post this to get the argument started. Just wanted to post a tongue in cheek review of a first timer shooting one.

They will absolutely test one ability to properly place a tree stand.

Shane,
Are you shooting your dad's old crossbow?
IIRC, that bow wasn't all that heavy. Good shooting bow though..

Still have not figured out how to re cock in a tree stand. Definitely a acrobatic act in a tree. Especially in a climber.

If not for the cross bow I could not hunt archery. Would rather use regular bow but this old body will not let me

Never did hold with the anti-crossbow rhetoric.

Shane, Are you shooting your dad's old crossbow? IIRC, that bow wasn't all that heavy. Good shooting bow though.. Yes woody, the ten point. Might not be heavy in crossbow terms, but it ain't no where as light as my Hoyt. It's not really the weight, its just clumsy. Just don't see how you guys use them. Accurate as all get out but I still think I can out shoot it with my vertical. That and pretty sure I almost lost a thumb. The string just barely grazed my thumb. Just enough to say, hey might wanna move that outta the way next time. I was shooting it to maybe take for fall turkey. I'd say it do the trick what with saving movement of drawing a bow but they don't handle that well.

I have the Barnett Quad, and it is heavy! ...probably one of the heaviest crossbows on the market. However, I sit in a ladder treestand with a rest cage. I'm impressed how guys shoot a bow. This requires practice.
My arms are long enough to easily cock it, but I do want to get a cocking string. I've never really thought about it before Woody questioned it; it's all I've ever done. I guess for consistency, I should use one.
I can see why bow hunters were frowning on them at first; it's a gun that shoots bolts.

The single shot "one and done" aspect of the crossbow (due to both inability to re-cock and noise) and the challenge they sometimes present in the awkwardness of being able to maneuver them in tight spots, to me, kind of erase some of their advantages over a vertical bow. Both have advantages and disadvantages. To me it's kind of a wash. Different animals, for sure, but similar challenge level.

A lot of the newer crossbows have the finger guards on them. And yes, they are cumbersome in the treestand as far as trying to re-cock. The ones with the hand cranks are more manageable I suppose. My Mission crossbow isn't bad at all as far as weight goes. I use mine normally for colder days on stand or in the ground blind. Definitely prefer using my Mission Venture compound when I can but won't hesitate to use the Mission crossbow otherwise.

Little off Topic but who Has needed or had deer stand around after a CB shot for a second shot I havent Deer hunting with my daughter a couple years ago, a small group of turkeys came in and I was able to get it ready for a second shot in our double ladder. Fyi. Aiming for the center of the body on a standing turkey, facing away, from a stand is not a good shot. Becca reminds me of me costing her a turkey that day every once in a while. I told her to put it in the middle..well middle of a turkeys back side from a tree stand will barely graze it's butt if you're lucky. I watched the bolts, both were right where I told her but there's a lot of long feathers back there. 1st shot drew no blood..2nd grazed something as we had a few drops of blood but not lethal.
