Dr. Ed Ashby did a rather large study on arrow penetration (on African game) and found momentum was the best predictor of penetration. Ashby is the man! I sometimes forget to separate the two very different things KE and Momentum...but yes momentum is definitely KING!

Just food for thought but an article I read a few years back actually said that a study of videotaped whitetails that had "jumped" the string were analyzed and that mathematically an alert whitetail can drop or "load up" to get out of dodge at just over 700 fps. Point being that no modern scorching fast bow has a chance to beat a truly alert whitetail. Hence why many guys and myself on an alert ready to bust deer will almost always aim tick lower (on the heart) and if they duck lungs are hit if not you still slide the arrow through heart and probably one lung atleast depending on shot angle.

I try not to shoot at alert (wired) deer. If I do I shoot low like you say. An unalert, stationary, good angled deer I rd aim at the spot I want to hit. I've never had a deer jump the string that I know of. That's shooting 150 fps recurves to 350 fps crossbows

Hey, I have another question:
With regards to the deer jump, when I stop a deer, they seem to be in alert to me. Ears up and now looking right at me. If it's not necessary to stop them, would it be best to not?

Only if your making a TV show. Then it seems to be mandatory. If it's not needed than it's just that... not needed. However if Mr. big daddy is chasing hot momma and isn't planning on stopping than do what ya have to do (what's there to lose anyway.
