Just a thought, 6 days before the opener. Nothing has been decided about saving the tails, and may not, until the campout. However, not just the people in the squirrel hunting contest, but to anybody that reads this, freeze them up, and we'll post later about sending them in and getting the money to Woody, for the site or contest prizes. Cut them off the hide, after skinning. Don't bone them out. Salting the stub is optional. Straighten, put in a gallon freezer bag [or other container], hang on to them until further notice. If I've mistated something, we'll get HillBillyJeff to straighten me out. Also, don't let the Mrs. throw them out, when you're not looking! Good luck to everybody next weekend. maddog

That's all I do. Cut the tail off and freeze. Mail in the colder months. They even reimburse you for postage.

Pardon my "newbie" status. What do you do with the tails and why save them? Is that proof for contest on count or do you do anything else with them?
Thanks

So now that season is over, how are we doing this? I have several from the past couple years.

Unfortunately, I think the only way it can be done is to send them to mepps yourself, and get reimbursed for your postage. Mailing the tails to one person is gonna be cost prohibitive. Not sure how many guys even saved the tails. Here is mepps website, with all the info on mailing tails. www.mepps.com/programs/squirrel-tail/maddog

I think best bet is replace them for lures then donate lures for competition?

I think best bet is replace them for lures then donate lures for competition? This started as a way to get some cash for Woody to help a little with site costs. Seems like it will be very little. Sure not what I expected, especially when it was first tossed around that the tails would go in together. The more tails you have, the higher the price. Wonder if we all sent them with Woody's info if Mepp's would count the individual packages as a single submittal from Woody and issue a check directly to him? ?

Well, I added my tails from this year to my two existing bags and did the math. They are going into next Thursday evenings trash.
Woody, could you please pm your mailing addy and I will get you a small (but bigger than what I would get out of the tails!) donation sent out.
Thanks for all you do, Woody!
