So I picked up the hunting guide today and the deer reduction zones (formerly called urban zones) are now open to guns from the beginning of gun season all the way through Jan 31. The maps for the new reduction zones haven't been released but it mentions the ones that are planned. I'm hoping it's smaller as it has been in the past as it's basically the whole county of Tippecanoe but I have a feeling it will be the same. So they decreased the anterless permits form 8 to 4 in our county last season but the deer reduction is now an extra 10 instead of 4. Looks like I can get 18 deer just in my county this year. I'll probably not even see that many. Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking.

Tough job to take into account all citizens wishes....its not always what we hunters think is best. Good luck.

Ridiculous. Sure seems like our state leadership is hell bent on eliminating the deer herd.

I believe when the HPR rule was being considered, HPR's could also be used in the deer reduction zones. Talk about overkill! Just my $0.02 worth.

I'll probably not even see that many. Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking. I believe that they have personal working in various DNRs that simply don't know anything about modern wildlife management. Here in Kentucky, our counties are Zoned 1 through 4, in which Zone #1 allows an unlimited antlerless tags, while Zones 2 & 3 only two bonus antlerless may be harvested, and only with archery equipment in Zone #3. Zone #4 it's Bucks only during Modern Rifle season. In Zone 1 & 2 Hunters get 16 days to hunt during Rifle Season and Zones 3 & 4 have only 10 days during Rifle season. This year my County is still in Zone 3#, but surrounding counties were re-zoned from #2 last year to Zone #1. I can walk across the road and be in a zone #1 county (LaRue), but I normally take only one Deer per year, sometimes two, but rarely. Next year our County will be either Zone 1 or 2 according to our DNR, as we've had an increase in Deer numbers the past few years.

Okay...fellas this specific post is about Urban Zones...let's not jump the gun on stating they're trying to eliminate the deer herd, no doubt within this zones they want less than that do in ag/rural type settings though.
I don't hunt Urban Areas personally what is the harvest totals one can do inside them?

No such a thing as "Urban Deer Zones" anymore. Contrary to some beliefs there are some areas of the state that need quite a few more deer killed and it doesn't fall under "urban".
This will put the properties in the "Deer Reduction Zones" at a premium now that a gun hunter can killed that EAB..

PS... Not sure what happens during the "Special Late Antlerless season" in the "Deer Reduction Zones"? Will the EAB gunner be able to take a buck then IF he/she has taken the antlerless first?
Hmmmm....

I don't have a paper guide yet.. I am anxious to see where all these "Reduction" zones are at. That is, if I'm interpreting this conversation correctly in my understanding that these reduction zones include areas other than the former "Urban" zones.

Our former wildlife biologist told me they had hope to know by September 1st. I would hope so since it starts Sept 15th. They guide mentioned where they were planned. Sounds like basically the same as the urban zones for this first year.

I'd say with the wording of "deer reduction zones" Lawrence and Washington counties are going to come up. While I do believe that these two counties have an abundance of deer, at least the areas I hunt, I would hate to see it happen.

Hmmmm.... I say YES if they have and use the proper lic. Guns will only be legal in the zones that local or state laws allow.....

Contrary to some beliefs the DNR is still serious about herd reductions in "strategic areas" that has been their plan all along.
My personal opinion is they are recieving guff about "bonus permits" (which they are dropping steadily the last three years) as being the number one reason for less deer being sighted. I still say the EHD and coyotes wiped out more deer in 2012 than the deer hunters did..
