I've had a dream since I was a kid. I remember watching some old black and white films (and yes duster...they were the reel to reel type back then ) in school on the building of the Alaska Highway. I sat there and daydreamed about how cool it would be to travel down that highway in a Jeep. The roads didn't seem like they could handle much in the way of a motorcycle at the time. But, as the years progressed, the dream took on a different nature...one of heading to Alaska on a motorcycle. Much of my mindset in the past 15-20 years of building, restoring, racing and extreme riding motorcycles has been a process of working through the bike I will probably ride. So my goal is to do this in the next 5 years. Therefore, I thought it would be of some benefit to gather any ideas from anyone here that has been to Alaska...on any mode of transportation. And for that matter...throw out any ideas you might have on your own "bucket list!"

Im only 34 so I'm adding to my list, but one is getting crossed off. We've been talking about an Alaskan trip and are now planning it. Mt grandparents have always wanted to go so I told my wife to plan it since they are around 75. Looks like we'll be going, Lord willing, first of July 2016. I also would like to do an African safari and a sheep hunt.

I guess I have a reality list and dream list. I would like to take my wife on an Alaskan cruise. I've never been on one, and don't have a desire to, but Alaska I would do.
I'd love to go to Israel, but my wife is afraid, so I'd have to go with a group. Hard to go anywhere away from her unless I'm hunting something.
Right now, waterfowl is still on my list, but I'll knock that out this year. Bear is on there too and a elk. I heard of a guy in Wyoming who sponsors handicap elk hunting. I might just do it, but really, I'd just like to take a hunt in any other state. Most likely, I'll go up by the UP for deer in a year or two.
HGC, I thought they were still digging for gold in Alaska when you were a kid. LOL I'm not far behind you.

Larry there was a guy from the Ft Wayne area that did the Alaska ride a few years ago. It was written up in the FT Wayne Journal-Gazette or the News-Sentinel. Seems to me he did it for some charity fund raiser. His trip was pretty much up and back due to time constraints.

Have been to AK (6) times hunting. Beautiful country, you won't be disappointed. I would do it in a manner where you weren't too pressed on schedule, so if you see something neat and wanted to stick around somewhere for a day or two you could. Might make more sense to fly to Anchorage, and then rent a bike to tour AK on, plus that would eliminate the Canadian border crossing issues.
Also, plan on rain and have good rain gear.

Buy an extended life battery (it's twice the size of a regular battery holds charges for days) for your cell phone. Money belt,a good quality cell phone holster, a good leatherman type multi-tool,quality watch, sunglasses, small compass, small pair of auto-focus binoculars and a GPS for the bike. Think about how to compact you stuff such as you don't need a whole tube of tooth paste take a 3/4 used one or buy travel size ones as you go, you can cut the handle down on you toothbrush. Put things in vacume seal bags or zip lock to provide extra protection from the weather.
If you travel with a friend give them a spare set of keys for your bike and likewise for them.
A good small flashlight, extra glasses, emergency info in your phone along with your doc's name and tele# and a listing of your meds.

The exact spelling is copied from the label. I include the doses too as well as any OTC meds I take regular. I keep my daughter's on a separate draft. Probably should do my wife's too.

Good luck with your quest highcottonguide !!!! A buddy of mine that I work with did this about 3 years ago, he said the roads ate his tires up. He started out with new and had to replace them while he was up there. I will find out the details from him, or I can get you his number and you could talk to him directly.

Hey saltydog, it's about time you replaced that bald headed alien as your avatar. I know you have some amazing bucks to put on there with your glowingly proud smile.
