Hello all, I just have to let you all know this that yesterday whenever I was leaving my parents house, moms b-day, incase anyone was wondering. I came outside walked to my car and saw something out the corner of my eye. Probably about 40yds to my left was a fairly mature doe, which leads me into this. Woody put up a post about "25 old timers secrets to hunting". In which one of them was that if you just walk on by the deer and don't make eye contact they just watch you.
Of course me being the skeptical one, until now since I haven't been able to try it. That is absolutely true. I was able to walk back into the house let my parents know and then back out to the car. Now here is the interesting part. Whenever I got into my car and turned it around and started driving towards her she still just stood there until I was about 10yds away from her and then she just walked off into the woods. I don't know if she was not all that leery of me since I didn't focus on her like a predator or what.
Kind of cool I thought, or maybe it's just me getting a little excited about this fall. I think I might give it a shot later on this year and see what happens.

I have had it happen many times. Normally in low light conditions and in open fields. Keep a steady gate, don't look straight at them, don't slow down or change directions, and sometimes they will just stand and watch you. Do anything that looks like you see them and they will bolt.

Yep. Pretty neat how their smart they are, or think they anyways.
First time I saw this in person was my 2 or 3rd year hunting. Long story short, I cut off a group of deer in a funnel ahead of them, missed the big buck and while walking to look for sign a lagging doe ran up on me. I continued walking and she stopped her tracks at about 20yds. The trail I was on went towards her about 5 more yds the made a sharp right basically walking away from her. I never turned my head towards her and even after coming within maybe 15yds she didn't budge until I turned and started down the hill away. At that point she still didn't bolt but tried to sneak away behind and past me moving as quiet as I've ever seen a deer.
Another time this happened the deer wasn't so sneaky. A few years ago, 3 does made a habit of eating acorns about 30yds from my mail box up in the woods. Right or wrong, I decided they looked tasty after a couple weeks. A couple days in a row I checked the mail with bow in hand but I was watching them and I guess acting like a hunter and they'd bolt when I'd get in bow range. Finally one day I just walked to the mail box without ever looking at them. I actually opened the mail box and everything, then drew my bow as I turned and there they were..calm as could be. There were only 2 does eating acorns after that day.

I can't look at a deer without that lUst filled hunger in my eyes so I would fail at this so have to use a different technique

I've had Deer come very close to me while Squirrel Hunting. Most of the time they just circle around me trying to figure out "what's up" with this guy.

I know this is a little different but the strangest thing I've seen was once while hunting there was 2 small does together and I shot one. The other just stood there 10-15 yards away and watched me go over and check it,go back and pick up my stuff and then followed me half way out of the woods while I was dragging it's buddy..... I've also had them get real close while squirrel hunting and have even talked to them and they just stand there looking at me until I'm a little ways away then they go on their way.

Bill Vale stressed this to me as well and I use it when checking cams or even heading to my stand. A predatory animal will stop and look at it it's prey...often times now I've walked within bow distance of deer that assumed I didn't see them.

Definitely going to try some "walking" thru the woods to see if it might work instead of stalking them.
