I was reading an article and it said something about using anise oil to help lure deer in? What is this stuff and does it really work? I've never heard of it before.

It has a licorice smell to it. We used cotton balls hung from tree limbs soaked in the stuff on bear baits in Canada..
Not sure if deer will be attracted to it other than maybe a curiosity thing..

I used anise oil once, when I was just in my third year of Deer Hunting (1975), and managed to see NO Deer. I think it will spook them rather than attract them because it would be a strange odor to Deer. ~NOT GOOD~

They are attracted to vanilla scent too. There are plants that have similar odor so I don't doubt there would be a few that are somewhat attracted to it.

As long as something isn't associated with man a younger deer might be enticed enough to investigate.

I'll probably pass on looking into it. The recipe stated dr. pepper, ammonia and anise oil. Thought I would put some feelers out there and see if anyone had heard of using it before. Thanks guys and god bless.

anise oil is great for soaking plastic fishing baits in like worms and jig trailers! Don't think I would want it for deer hunting.

I bet most would be suprised what attractants have this in it already. Like skunk essence, it is a great vehicle and in low concentrations will help transport odors tuat may otherwise be less mobile.
The dr pepper and ammonia would be more concerning to me than the anise oil!

Not sure about deer, but definitely use anise oil for fishing. Commercial attractants like Baitmate and the old Fish Formula contain anise oil. My great grandmother used to use black jellybeans for bait!

Jellybeans? Curious. What did she primarily catch with it?
