That looks more like an Eastern water mouthed cotton moccasin sidewinder rattle snake to me

Notice he said his wife works for the US forestry. Where you think it came from. She found it or released it? Using them to stop the spread of black bears? ?

She is the seamstress for the baby snake parachutes. The piolot of the black helicopters is a hoot

That is crazy that they're so close together.. Wonder if the rattler was trying to eat the copperhead?
Either that, or they're about to make Woody's "Eastern water mouthed cotton moccasin sidewinder rattle snake."

Very cool.
If I came upon that scene I would hastily depart the area. Your wife is a brave women for going back and taking a picture.

I don't really care about seeing a live one, but I would love to go somewhere they are served so I could find out what they taste like! I've never tried rattle snake meat, but a friend of mine says it taste a little like Frog Legs. While attending Murray State, our Wildlife Biology Club once had fried Muskrat legs at one of our meetings. Tasted much like Squirrel except the meat was darker in color. My uncle used to trap muskrat a lot. I have had fried muskrat (why waste the meat, right?) and found it to be almost like a slightly greasier gray squirrel.

Looks like some good bow backings to me. I would love to go out west and do some rattlesnake hunting.

Been getting sent some pretty cool pictures of some they are catching. Had one of an all black rattler, very very faint markings and a almost pure gold color copperhead with faint markings also.

You have to catch them because they have to be at least 42" for rattler, male, and you have to count the plates and rattles to age them. Pretty awesome how they do it. They have a clear tube that has measurements on it. Slide the snake in head first and you are pretty safe. I'm with you though. Not my thing. They really get into it. Years ago they used to have a rattler roundup in upstate. They would bring in 100's of them. Had all kinds of idiot contests. Every year someone got bit. There was one guy, I think he went 6 years in a row getting bit. Got to a point they said anti venom wouldn't work anymore.

Just curious - whereabouts in the HNF? At least roughly?
I have eaten rattler in Wyoming - frog leg is probably as close as I can say. Tell you what though, if you want a meal you better get a bunch of them. Not much meat on them.

There sure do make a nice hat band for my cowboy hat. Other than that. I have NO use for them. A few years ago. I did set behind a man at the Indy 500 that had a shirt on that said rattlesnake round up championship. So I had to know. Started talking to him and he had been in the round up several times. Then he showed me some fairly nasty scares on his hands and for arms. He was from Pennsylvania. And I'm pretty sure he was a nut case. Lol

From what the vet told me is that every time you get bit by a snake the results are less. Every time you get stung by a bee it get worse. I see way more bees than snakes. Ever wonder how many you have walked right by in the field?

The event that got watched the most was the "roundup". I forget, maybe 10 rattlers were released in a circle pen. Quickest time putting em back in the sack wins. Wanna guess what event resulted in the most bites. Man they used to bring in some monsters. I don't know if they still hold the event even but back when they used to kill em all at the end of the weekend. Last time I was there they had to release them all back where they caught em.

Last turkey season I ran into two black snakes that swore they were rattlers. They had that ol tail just a twitching in the leaves. You have to wonder where they learn that or how they do. I just got over my fear of snakes a couple of years ago. Seen a snake and figured it was time so I reached down and snatched it up. Don't bother me much now. I catch quite a few every year in my running pen and throw em over the fence. Accidentally threw one on the hot wire last year. Have a 50 mile buffalo charger on one wire. He didn't like that one bit. Pretty sure he stayed on the right side after that.
