Find a Handi-Rifle in 357 Mag. He can shoot 38 Specials for plinking and Magnum for hunting. You can ream out to a 357 Maximum in 15 minutes and have a rifle that he can hunt with forever. Check out the info on 357 Max, you will be surprised, it is far superior than a 44 Mag.

I would say muzzleloader if your comfort level is good with them. Also only if your loading it teach them but load it yourself. Omega or one with a thumbhole is better they can grip it better. If they can reach trigger.
Nothing wrong with 410 good squirrel gun. Might take him squirrel hunting first get the qitters out of the way. Set under a tree and test his ability to be quite and still. Plus its fun watching rats drop from the tree. Look at that one spinning lol.
Honestly I know a guy that drilled and tapped a 410 for his son and after practice the kid can hit good groups at 70 yrds. His was a topper hr 410 that kid was 7.
I got a buddy that has a Henry 44 his 8 yr old shoots it. It's a little to pricey for me buying one but very nice gun.
These guys have gave some good insight but main thing sure he is ready and ok shooting a animal. Never force a shot let him feel comfortable. Even if he has a easy shot.

I bought my then 5 year old a CVA Wolf Compact. Sighted it in with 80 grains of powder and let him kill pumpkins with 50 grains until we couldn't find anymore pumpkins. When it came time to shoot a deer, he never noticed the additional 30 grains of powder. The gun kits him well and has less recoil than his mossberg turkey gun loaded with pheasant loads.
Although the gun worked out well, I'm going to get him a Scout 44 for deer hunting before fall. Mainly for my convenience. I don't like cleaning the muzzleloader.
