Don't expect to see any poultry projects at the county fairs this summer. The BOAH of Indiana just announced a ban on any poultry shows, swap meets, etc. for the rest of the year due to the Avian flu. I feel sorry for all the kids that won't be able to show their birds and sell them at the fair.

Don't forget the parents of the first year poultry participants that dropped all the money to get them into the program......

Had to break the news to my kids this morning. They were a bit bummed.

Totally unfair for all the poultry 4H kids. It would be nice if they could have a makeup date for them when the ban is lifted. They didn't even cancel shows when hoof and mouth disease was an issue while I was showing. Huge blow for 10yr members.

I was told judging would be done by pictures.
Really?

I was told judging would be done by pictures. Really? Each county can come up with it's own way of dealing with it. We are working on some fun things for the kids to do. Like instead of a rooster crowing contest, a chicken crowing contest in which the kids crow. A chicken flyoff contest where the kids shoot a toy chicken out of a slins shot. We are still working on ideas. If any of you have an idea let me know. After all I feel the fair is for the kids first, got to keep it fun for them even in a bad situation. The picture idea was tossed around and we feel there is no way that can work.

I tell my kids "fair" is a place you go in the summer...there just won't be chickens there this year.

I went to a meeting Wednesday with a vet from Purdue and a Dr. from the BOAH and they said it may take 3 to five years for it to run it's coarse. They also want anyone that finds a group of dead birds with no apparent cause of death to report it immediately to the DNR.

So all poultry shows are going to be shut down for 3 to 5 years because a virus "might" get spread from backyard flocks and show birds to the industrial poultry flocks? ! The industrial flocks are and have always been at a higher risk of getting and spreading infections than any backyard flocks. It's the same situation in the swine industry, hence the reason hog barns are always a quarantine area.
