INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana motorists who obey the speed limit in the left lanes of multi-lane highways soon will be required to move over to allow faster vehicles to pass or risk $500 fines.
A new law signed by Gov. Mike Pence and taking effect July 1 gives speeders the right of way in so-called highway fast lanes. The law permits police to issue tickets to left lane drivers who fail to budge when they should reasonably know another vehicle is overtaking them,
Republican state Rep. Jud McMillin of Brookville said he sponsored the law to give an incentive to motorists who are driving too slowly in the fast lane to move over.
Other lawmakers say police who observe such situations would more likely ticket the speeders.

Right lane is the driving lane and the left lane is the passing lane. If one is not passing stay in the right lane..

Slower traffic keep right....that goes for everyone. Nothing like two semis side by side on I70 with one going 65 and the other going 66. Hill comes along and both slow to 60.
Almost seems like they enjoy watching the cars stack up behind them.
Even those "passing" need to get the heck out of the way if there is a faster driver behind you. Either speed up and pull in or slow down and pull in....whatever the case get out of the way.
Hope they enforce the heck out of it....

Back when Carter imposed a 55 mph limit some truckers were whizzed and took it to an extreme and did a side by side at double nickels . Backed up traffic for miles and miles..

Think there are some that are still bitter....I don't put all apples in the same basket but some truck drivers bug the heck out of me. They drive the tanks of the road and those drivers act like it. Pull out in front of you because they know you'll put it in the ditch before you hit them. Take a wide curve in your lane because they know they'll win in the worst case they hit you. Stack up traffic behind them just cause they can....
Not all. Not most. Just some.

My wife will get in the left lane when we're travelling, but driving 55. I tell her to get over or we'll get run over. Not sure what she is thinking.
I have slowed down a bit in my old age. One day a mini van and Buick passed me ...in the same day! I think my testosterone was low.

If everyone does the speed limit and no one BREAKS THE LAW (a sin, by the way) what difference does it make which lane one is in? I post this simply to stir the pot.

Why a new law to write ticket to someone going the speed limit is going slower than someone speeding?

So many on here are real sticklers on game laws but seem to be very lax on speed limits...
My question...what is the difference?

I don't see game wardens breaking game laws on a daily basis?
I just try and do as our law enforcement officials do.....
I have a spoon too.

I drive the speed limit unless I know a cop is around to catch me doing otherwise. I don't break game laws but I'm sure if a warden was around he would catch me breaking a game law.

500 dollar fine is excessive IMHO. And what if I'm driving on the Lloyd Expressway in Evansville and want to turn left on one of the roads coming up? Do I have to stay in the right lane until the last minute and then try to cross three lanes of traffic to make my left hand turn. Not every highway has clover leaf on every cross road that access the highway.
If I'm going 70 mph and the speed limit is 70 mph and I'm in the left land and someone is in the right lane next to me going 70 mph then it's going to be impossible to pass them without speeding.
Yes it can be frustrating when they are in the left lane and going 10 mph under the speed limit and you can't pass them or get them to pull over into the right hand lane. In those cases I'm all for this new law. But if they are in the left lane and going the speed limit or even a few mph faster I don't think that they should get a $500 fine for doing that. And how will the police enforce this law unless they are all out there in unmarked cars. Which is probably what they will be using to enforce this law.

No one should EVER be fined for going 70mph in a 70mph speed limit zone NO MATTER WHAT LANE THEY ARE IN. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!
