I have an AR 15 and have been using a sonic cleaner to clean the Bolt Carrier Group with some Hornady Cleaning Solution diluted to 40:1 with distilled water. I also added a little ( couple of squirts ) of Simply Green Cleaning Liquid.
My BCG and it's parts come out looking clean but I'm worrying that I might have taken the coating off the bolt and it's carrier. The parts come out clean on the outside but they have a brassy look now. Also the inside of the Bolt Carrier where the bolt fits and where the gas enters the Bolt Carrier still has carbon in the back end of the hole in the Bolt Carrier. That carbon is hard to get out of there.
I tried to scrape it out with a Tois B.O.N.E. Tool but I'm not sure that worked and got it clean as I want it to be. I can still stick a white long "Q TIP" into the hole and get some black carbon on the Q tip when I pull it out. It's not that dirty in the hole but there is still some black visible in the back end of the hole. I guess it's hard to get it White Glove Clean back in that hole as that's where the hot gases enter into the Bolt Carrier and put the Bolt Carrier back into the Buffer Tube. There is a lot of heat and dirty gases going though the gas tube and down into the BCG at this point. So the carbon get's burned into the pores of the metal in there. And it's hard to reach inside the hole to clean it. I did stick a couple of pipe cleaner down into the key's tube and out into the inside of the BC. Bold Carrier =BC.
Anyone else have any experience with using a Ultra Sonic Cleaner for cleaning your guns and parts? The metal on the barrel is finished with a Salt Bath Nitride Solution according to the ads and product description on the Ambush Firearms Web Site. But it didn't say anything about what type of finish is put on the Bolt Carrier other than the inside is chrome lined. And I can see the chrome inside the Bolt Carrier. Ironically that's where the dirt is located after I shoot the rifle.
