Oh another thing. Whatever you do, look at the ground before you kneel down or lay down to take a prone shot. Wear leather boots, not cloth ones. There are all sorts of cactus out there, and the thorns will go thru cloth boots easily. You don't want to be picking thorns out of your knees either. One guy that I know wears knee guards so he doesn't have to worry. I brought a shooting mat to put on the ground for shooting prone, and it STILL has cactus thorns in it. There's cactus there that isn't any taller than 1" but they still have pointy thorns!!!! Not too pleasant to sit on either

Especially for your hunting buddy who has to pick them out.

Awesome, will be following this thread as you progress through prepping and hopefully updates while out there come the fall. Antelope hunting is something I have been wanting to do a DIY hunt for a long time! Our dearly lost friend used the .257 Roberts I got from him solely on antelope for years and I'd love to drop one with it for him again.

Nice rig paradise! I bet that thing is a pleasure to shoot.
Ty - If you plan on doing a DIY antelope hunt in the next few years, might want to consider accumulating points now. Preference points aren't necessarily required to have a decent hunt, but they are only $30 and will give you lots more options for units with public access.

I would much prefer to be able to freely roam public ground and there is lots of it especially in the western half of the state. And that rifle will definitely get the job done!

Thanks...it makes me giddy every time I pull the trigger;D ;D ;D I agree on the preference points. I bought one last year b/c I knew I needed one to hunt the area I'm going to this year. We are also applying for trespass fees to be able to hunt some limited access areas of public land....basically sections that are landlocked by private land Trophy Paradise Habitat Consulting "Trophies are built from the ground up" m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=852914431431752

There's also a lot of landowners who open up their lands to the public to hunt on. Be courteous and close gates, etc. All they ask is that if you harvest an animal on their property that you fill out the form from the state and put it in the container that is usually at the gate to the property. The landowner gets some compensation from the state for every animal harvested. (or at least they did when I was there in 2009/2010)

Thanks for the preference point tip...I'm probably looking at a 2017 hunt so will do so next year....or would two years worth be needed? When the time comes I may seek some advice on how to get it all set up and what sections to request (if you request?).

They are only $30 and you have until sept. 30th to buy one Trophy Paradise Habitat Consulting "Trophies are built from the ground up" m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=852914431431752

When the time comes I may seek some advice on how to get it all set up and what sections to request (if you request?). 2 points could get you a real nice hunt in an area with lots of public land, so I'd recommend starting this year with the PP's. Deer points are $40, so if you want to do a combo probably will want to pick those up too. You have to apply for a specific unit, so a lot of research goes in to finding units with accessible public land that is good antelope country, that is also within your drawing pool (your # of pp's). If you do opt to do a antelope/deer combo, it gets more complicated trying to find an area that's good for both species, and the deer and antelope units have different boundaries and numbers (antelope area 27, for example, is deer unit 10). It is complicated at first, but once you get a basic understanding of how it works it's actually pretty fun to do all the mapwork, go over the draw odds, etc. that goes into planning a hunt. I've only been out a couple times for antelope, but would be happy to help as best I can anyone planning their first trip out there.

Another vote for getting as many preference points as possible. Also, if you want to hunt there, but don't want to burn your preference points, you can put in for a very hard to draw area, and an area that you want to hunt as 2nd. If you don't get the first preferred area, but do draw the 2nd, you won't burn your preference points up, and still get one for that year. You only burn your preference points if you are drawn for your first preferred area. One area that I hunted needed 3 points to get a relatively good chance of getting drawn.

I will be going to Wyoming in sept. to hunt antelope for the first time. I have access to a 3k acre private ranch, but will be hunting DIY...I'm not hunting with an outfitter. I really want to shoot one with a bow...but as it's my first trip there I will be taking a rifle also...thinking of buying a 25-06 to take. Any suggestions/tips? I really have no idea what to expect since I have never hunted antelope before Trophy Paradise Habitat Consulting "Trophies are built from the ground up" www.facebook.com/trophyparadiseResults are up.. my group did not draw. Going to have to come up with a backup plan. How did you do?

Our group of 6 drew 4 out of 6 region B deer tags and 2 out of 2 area 9 antelope tags. They really cut the number of tags this year. This is the first year out of the last 20 that we did not all draw.

Yes, but I'm pretty sure there is a max of 4 people on party apps..
