Just curious, why do owls kill them? Not exactly competitors are they?

Years ago had a farmer neighbor that was loosing ducks, geese and then his Peacocks in the same manner, just the heads were removed. We put a very tall post in the ground next to the area they were being killed, with a jaw style trap on top. Within a few days we had the culprit it was great horned owl. They will dive down and grab the bird by the head then when they take off the head becomes detached.

Usually its mine. After a couple weeks, the ducks start to come up missing with no heads. Owls have a field day for about a month till they kill them all. Usually there is one lucky survivor who stays awhile, but usually he ends up behind the dam killed by a fox or coyote.

Did a little Google searching and the most plausible answer to the "why?" was because the brains are high in nutrition and they have the added benefit of not having to fight with all the feathers. Sounded like a good answer to me. Besides, I read it on the internet so it must be true!

After studying that photo a little better that looks like something my wife could do to a turkey after I spend to much time and money chasing them.
