Man was I looking forward to going to Crane for the first time on Sunday but the weather forecast has me depressed. Rain, breezy, and warm. I have already taken 3 deer so it's not like I need anymore. Being over 3 hours from home I'm also worried about keeping a deer from spoiling if it's going to be 57 degrees. It's my Dad's 74th bday weekend and I was hoping for a little bit better weather as he has become more of a fair weather hunter. He hasn't mentioned anything about not wanting to go yet but I hate the feeling of dragging him down there if he really doesn't want to go.

10point, do what you want to do. If you are satisfied with your season then be done and enjoy your family.

Temperature will be comfortable. Pop up a ground blind to keep dry. You never know what might get pushed your way.

Last I heard was thunderstorms around here on Sunday - and they are calling for the winds to go along with it; that would be the bigger issue for me. I have never done any good in high winds. (and it proved so again this week) There is always the blood trail issue as well.

Over the years of hunting Deer, I've only got drawn to hunt Crane three times. At each time, the weather was lousy, either heavy or light rain, windy & way too Warm. But I bagged my very first Deer there, and that December day, back in 1977, was warm and showery. <GOOD LUCK ON SATURDAY!!>

Sorry Brad but I don't think I'll take my tractor that far just to haul one deer out....ooops that not very encouraging Think of it as a scouting trip for next year....which unfortunately it may be!

It's now a 20% chance it will not rain. I believe the total kill from the first hunt was in the teens...

I believe, at this point, I would let the parental unit make the decision since it is his birthday and all.

There weren't many killed last Sunday. My cousin's son got a decent old 10 point and I heard there was a decent 12 taken in the area I was in. We only saw does in the morning and nothing in the sleet in the afternoon.
I believe there were approx 120 hunters and that number will be up around 300 or so on Sunday. Still not a lot of people for size of the base.
I hunted several of the gun hunts a few years ago when they allowed contractors and it seemed to storm every hunt.
I won't lie, if it's raining and windy, I'll probably skip. I'm lucky enough to be able to hunt all 4 gun hunts and bow hunt there as well.

Here's a forecast I can live with. It's from scoutlook and is probably wrong but it gives me some hope that there will be dry times and times with not strong winds.

Don't worry about the temperature being too warm to keep your meat, it would keep for days at those temperatures. The ideal temp for aging meat it 40.

Back in 1973, I was drawn to hunt at Crane, but we had heavy rain/storms, all day, plus a tornado watch in the Crane area!! Almost impossible to hunt in these conditions and I even had a real nice Buck run past from where I was setting. Got my shotgun up on my shoulder but my glasses were all steamed up!! So I didn't get to take the shot.
