Need some advice/tips on ground blinds. Ive recently bought one for my wife and I. This is her first year of actually hunting. Im wanting to put it out so she can go this saturday. Big question, is this going to spook the deer being such short notice? Any help or pointers fellas on these id appreciate. Ive never used one, always my climber or lock ons.

I have read that deer are less spooked if the blind is out in an open field. They won't pay much attention to it, but if you put it inside the woods then it will make them wonder what that large object is doing in the woods all of a sudden. I put my blind up last year out in a field, and never used it, but I did have deer walking right by it same day I put it out. My girlfriends dad has been hunting out of blinds for a while and he usually brings it into the field with him and carries it out each time.

I have a BUDDY HEATER for my portable ice shanty. It will melt snow on the ice so it should heat a hub blind up if you don't have a lot of windows open. If knocked over it goes right out too. You might want to load it on a deer cart as it is not light. Most big box stores sell them. Tell her to suck it up at least she will be out of the wind LOL. Good luck to her, my wife has no interest in hunting.

A small catalytic heater will do the trick ... if its really cold you can carefully place it under your chair and then put a blanket over your lap and you should be warm no matter how cold it gets.
As for the blind .... a good chance it will spook deer unless well brushed in.

I totally agree that deer don't like a "new" blind in the woods, typically blowing, stomping, and making a big scene about it, BUT care less in an open field. We have had deer walk within feet of ours out in the open, throwing caution to the wind, but almost never tolerate it in the woods unless disguised as previously stated.

I've had deer blow and stomp at my turkey blind when it was out in a field. I'd say brush in well and give them time to get used to it.

Get it out as soon as possible. Brush it in, particularly try to take away the "skyline" of the blind. Usually try to get mine out a couple weeks ahead of time. But if you are gun hunting a field, I would say a week ahead of time would be plenty.

In open fields where it is common for trucks, farm equipment, logging equipment, etc, to be parked, deer will not be too concerned with a new blind. They are very used to stuff being left in the open. In the woods, or in a field that doesn't usually have many man-made objects in it, they WILL be very cautious of a blind for a while. A week is probably a good amount of time to let them warm up to it. I don't know if brushing it in is necessary, unless you REALLY brush it in big time.

I do not hunt out of mine too often but I definitely get it out well in advance. As for a heater, I use a buddy heater on those cold cold days.

Honestly I think it depends on the woods and how used to people the deer are.
I put my daughters up in the dark a couple years ago and didn't realize it was in a trail. Took it down and deer were using the trail 2 hours later. We've had deer bed down right next to them in the woods, but farms a mile away can't keep the deer from going bonkers when they try to use them.

Thanks fellas for all the tips. After this mornings hunt I put her up. Concealed it the best i could, I guess from here on out we hope for the best! A blind is about the only way the wife will hunt from here on out, with a heater lol. I tried to talk her into the heater body suits...her response was "kids and christmas" which was all she had to say and i quickly forgot that idea. I just hope she gets to atleast see some deer. She went out a couple times earlier in the year and we were skunked. Ive sit the area I have the blind in 6 times this year and have saw deer every sit. Next time we are in there she will be with me, we'll see how it pans out. Thanks again fellas

I bow hunt little from them but I gun hunt a lot. I have killed deer the day I put it up but I like to put them up early. I do not use heaters as the blind is warmish any way I just bundle up good

I tried heating my blind with a buddy heater (propane catalytic) 2 years ago and it made me light headed and sick. I don't know if there was a problem with the heater but it was working (producing heat). Yes all the windows on my ground blind were open.
Since then, I've just dressed warmer and the blind keeps enough of the wind and elements off of me that I stay warm without the heater.
Concerning whether or not erecting a new blind will scare deer away, I guess that depends a lot on where you are putting it and how close you want the deer to get to it before you'll take a shot. I would say it isn't going to matter much where you erect the blind if you are going to be shooting deer before they come within 30 yards of it. I don't think they are going to stand 40 yards or more away from it, see it, and be scared that something just appeared in the woods. If anything, the new smell of the blind and/or the noise you would make putting it up would scare the deer more than the "appearance" of it alone. At least, this is what I would think.

Spray it down good with scent killer, keep one of the side windows closed, wear a black face mask or pull overhead cover and sit still. The deer will come out, stop and stare then go on their way. That is the time to stop them for a shot.
