Wednesday evening the first two deer I saw were a mature doe and her yearling doe .... shortly after thier appearance three eager young bucks showed up and proceeded to run those two ragged until the does had had enough and headed out.
That in and of itself is not unusual .....but, in the span of 2 hours I had an additional 10 bucks show up one of which looked to be 4.5 years old. three 3.5 year olds, five 2.5 year olds and one more 1.5.
Again .... might just be an anomaly.
Yesterday evening I was in the stand and a shaking tree across the CRP caught my attention. I quickly found the shaker in my binocs .... a BIG, heavy 8 pointer which looked to be 4.5 or possibly older. A swirling wind caused me some problems and the deer ended up laying down and on alert for 30 minutes before finally getting up and slowly walking the other direction.
A few minutes later a little doe comes tearing by me .... up and bow at the ready I just knew there would be a buck on her tail and sure enough here comes not one but two 1.5 year old bucks. A spike and a 6 point. Gruntin and a runnin.
A third small buck watched the chase from a short distance before continuing his cruise.
Again .... maybe just an anomaly.
Get a call this morning from a buddy of mine who works road construction and he proceeds to tell me about a giant he just saw at the job site. I asked if he was doing anything "deery" and he said he looked like he was cruising.
Again .... maybe just an anomaly but it sure looks like things are gearing up a bit earlier than the last couple of years.
The moon we were talking about in another thread happens November 6 and that is pretty early ... maybe late October will be unusually good this year.

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder the same thing myself. Besides all of a sudden me and my wife are seeing deer crossing our road much more often than we had been starting this week, my friends who own one of the properties I hunt in Brown Co are seeing increased doe activity this week on their place.

Swilk, I can assure you that the numbers of bucks you are reporting would be an anomaly for most of us! Sounds like you need to film a TV show at your place!

Its a unique piece of property to be sure.... but even here mature deer don't poke their heads out this early. Not with any consistency that is....

How many acres do you have?

150 acres of pure he!! for humans but paradise for deer.
Landlocked with no roads by it and surrounded by hundreds more acres of good farm ground and strips of timber.
My deer density is rediculous.
The White River is my west border....

The early rut thread comes up every year. First two weeks of November is always the time to be in the woods IMHO.

Any developments or timber harvesting going on in your area? Might be the reason you are seeing that number of Deer on your property. Same where I am; down the road they have been harvesting timber, and this activity has pushed more Deer on my property. Rut here has just started.

I'm starting to see scrapes pop up and get hit every day. I'm also seeing bucks moving around midday when 2 weeks ago I didn't. Much more buck movement on the place that I primairly hunt than doe activity.

Thing's seem pretty normal here for me. Went out this morning, saw a few does and did see a few decent rub's walking out. My past experience is it usually get's very slow from around the 15th to 25th for mature buck sightings during daylight hour's. Swilk maybe you had a mature doe come into heat early??? Could explain the quick pickup in activity and would be approx 30 days from peak rut of mid November. (just a theory)

Passed up a high 130 Wednesday because he was only 3.5.....I would a killed the one yesterday evening if given the chance.

Saw a small buck chasing a doe yesterday. She ran across the field and stopped to pee, when the buck got there he sniffed it and started lip curling.

I'm not seeing any of that in Jasper Co. Had a 2 year old sniff a doe on Sunday just but thee was no chasing or anything. Wednesday morning there was 2 young bucks playfully sparring. Some more scrapes showing up but not many rubs.

I'm not suggesting the rut is "on" or anything like that.....just reporting what I'm seeing and pondering that 10-15 days from now, at the end of the month, might be a great time to be in the woods.

The bucks may be more active earlier and display rut activity but I am guessing the ladies will still come into estrus around the same time so that might make for some tired bucks if they get fired up alittle early.

Well there are some does that come in estrous this month... very few, but it is possible

Looks like it could be a trickle rut. I have no idea what that means, I just wanted to be the first to say it this year.
