well been going to the Miami county farm since 2003 and never had a camera even messed with, some stands but not a camera, not until I went today.
On my way out this morning I decided to check a camera I had out for a little over a week to see how many pictures were on it.... well that did not happen as it was gone, bungee cord and all, gone.
So instead of going to the stand I had decided to go to I went to where I had another camera at by a stand several hundred yards away.. camera 2 gone.....
So I hunted just till 930am then got up and checked out my other cameras, luckily they were there.
So as I pondered while on stand this morning I could only think of two scenarios.. one, someone was tracking a deer without permission and stepped in front of the camera and instead of just being a considerate thief and just take the SD card, they took the cameras.
Or someone was wondering the property for who knows what reason and got their picture taken and just took the camera and all
Not sure, but did get to meet the DNR officer in the county now and had a nice talk with him and made a new friend. He told me he would be checking on the property and I gave him the landowners number to call because he wants all trespassers arrested.
The silver lining is that the guys that lease the big acres across the street saw a vehicle parked outside the west gate a few days ago and have a perfect description of it. They are going to contact the officer and see if the vehicle can be located and the owner questioned.
I don't use the most expensive cameras, the one was an older HuntCam camera, but it worked awesome... but its the fact that I do not steal from people and have a huge problem with someone who calls themselves a hunter taking another hunters equipment or stand.. they are not hunters.
Well thanks for letting me vent.... LOL

Sad reality in todays world. Hopefully you recover them and they pay the price. Good luck.

I had my first theft experience earlier this year, with someone stealing a lock-on stand and screw-in steps. As for cameras, I pull mine before season for just this very reason. My newest camera is password protected, so if someone were to steal it, at least they could never use it. With a combination of numbers and letters in the multi-digit password, they would never crack it. That's 1,679,616 combinations!

well I usually run cameras early but I've been behind at this property all season. But I do run them during season on transitional areas to get a feel what time deer are in those areas so I can plan my approaches.
Hopefully the persons will get caught, the guy has a good description of his pick up truck.

I will run my cameras up to squirrel season and then take them out. Some people just cant leave other peoples stuff alone. Now I just use a climber/blinds and take them with me when I leave.

Ive had a few cameras stolen as well as tree stands on private property. I also contacted conservation officer in my area as the land owner wants all trespassers arrested as well. It is so hard for me to deal with that another hunter would steal a stand out from under another. I agree with you, they are not hunters and it just sickens me !! Lets just hope these people eventually get caught

Trading their souls for a trail camera... how pitiful is that?

Reading many posts over the last couple of years about trail cam thefts, the best [but hardly ever used] is one on the ground to capture game movement, and one several feet away and very high up to capture who is wanting to make off with the one on the ground. Thieves know they are doing something wrong, and want to get the easy one as fast as they can and get out of the area. Most likely they will look around before stealing, but never look 20+ feet up.

This season I played around with making my own bear proof camera box's. Bought small electrical fuse box's, drilled holes in the back to lag to the tree and holes in door for the camera lens, they have small latch's on them you can put a lock threw.

That would keep the honest people honest. The determined thief will still get it.. I had a stand up with a huge 80 grade chain and a huge padlock on it. They got the stand, sticks AND my expensive chain. I had another stand with the same chain and lock that we decided to move but the lock was frozen. I used a battery powered cutting wheel and cut it off in 30 seconds.. I'm sure the theifs used something similar..

Great idea on the electrical boxes. I have had a several stolen myself off personal property and have never quite gotten over it....so much so I quit running them. It's a shame, It always felt like a kid at Christmas checking the cards to see what was lurking around. I always wanted to try the 20' in a tree surveylance camera idea, but never liked the idea of dragging a ladder out there every time I needed to maintain it. I guess if you could mount it in a climber tree it would make it much easier.

Well lets just say I am working on this . I know someone walked the property recently as I found boot prints that are not mine, they walked the edge and through the woods and around another edge.
If they get caught the owner is ruthless and will press charges on anyone and everyone.
Sad people just can't leave people alone, but what goes around comes around.
Just wish I had a tracking devise on the cameras as I believe they are very close to the property and would love to see the look on the persons face when the DNR pulls in to retrieve the camera and arrest them on theft and trespassing charges.

Best of luck on catching him. It sounds like you have some good leads. It could very well be someone who has had access (legal or not) before and don't want to go way quietly. Maybe the long arm of the law will convince him? biggrin2 .

Sorry to hear about your cameras bud. Hope they find out who did. It's these kind of situations that make you want get cameras that send pics to your computer. Not that I could afford those but, that is the reason I'd get one.

Good luck on getting them back. I hope Karma catches up to the thief that took them. I had a conversation with a CO about a trail cam picture of myself as I was recovering a deer on my neighbors property. I had permission to be there but unknowingly crossed onto another persons unmarked property deep in the woods. When I told him I saw the camera that got the picture of me he was surprised that I didn't steal it. I told him it wasn't mine so I had no rite to take it. I guess most people he deals with would have stolen it. Just because a person hunts deer it doesn't make them a saint. Think about how many times you hear about trail cams and tree stands being stolen, deer poached, property damaged. There is a portion of "deer hunters" that are just low life trash. Its sad that it has to be that way.

Well I hope that it was just someone walking the property, maybe a mushroom hunter or someone other then a hunter. If not I am concerned they will come back and keep looking for stuff to steal...
I can accept that, hard to accept another person that calls themselves a hunter would do that, why not just take the SD card if you do not want to be caught, better yet leave it all alone and fess up about trespassing
Hopefully the guy across the street can give a good enough description of the pick up truck that was there to the DNR CO...

I had the same thing happen last year. Thief stole 2 of my tail camera's. Luckily he missed the third one.. it got his picture...BUSTED! Game Warden got them back for me..The guy was coon hunting off a side by side and spotlighting at night...I got his pic and he got busted.. he plead guilty to a felony after we showed em the pics..I pressed charges...it was a neighbor guy who has a reputation for stealing...wasn't his first time getting caught..so he got some time.
Hope you find them John. Buy some Python cables and lock them up from now on.

I honestly don't know how well any lock and cable will keep them from getting stolen. I don't know if a super duty heavy lock will be any more effective than a simple wire cable and $1 lock vs. a ratchet strap and no lock.
A trail cam in a bear proof box (locked) and that was python cable locked to the tree. It was next to the private dead end gravel road that led to the furture house pad, almost 1/2 mile off of the public road. One house pad at the end of the private road, private road was 100% on private property. That trail cam lasted less than 2 weeks. Everything was gone.

Heck, if they were locked up, people in my area would simply take a nearby rock and smash the camera.
