I agree about getting the best mount possible, and hang the cost. Look at it this way. How many years do you plan on having it on the wall? What's the cost per year? $10/week is $520 per year......... Say you have it on the wall for 10 years. Lets round up the dollar figure. That mount will cost you $0.15 per day.
I had a big 10 point mounted (shoulder) in '78 and it's still on the wall. Yes, it needs a new cape because it's bleached from the sun, but it's held up over how many years? IIRC it cost around $300 back then......... So, for the price that is being charged now, $500 sounds like a screaming deal for a quality mount that will last for years and years.

Anyone know a lower cost taxidermist ($300 or less) that can do a shoulder mount for me in central Indiana? Thanks. In taxidermy work, like anything else, you usually get what you paid for. Your first bow buck is deserving. You wont kill another "first bow buck". When you have someone look at your deer and they asked which one is the oldest and there is 18 years between the oldest and the newest, you realize what you get by going to a good taxidermist that charges a little more.

Yep... quality will certainly outlast the "got it done cheaper" by a long shot. I've got mounts by three different people on my wall. Two very early deer by a taxidermist in Kentucky, one by my son (who dabbled in it for fun) and the rest by Dean Stallion of American Taxidermy in Boonville. There is a world of difference in the work on the mounts. Dean's look like they are absolutely alive and ready to come out of the wall.. Dean charges $550 and it is well worth it.. www.american-taxidermy.com/If it is worth mounting it is worth having it done right... I agree with the one poster that said he would rather have a European mount than a bad shoulder mount.

To the OP,
I still regret not working on paying off a high dollar shoulder mount on my first bow kill buck (he was a P&Y caliber to boot!). However, I am extremely happy that I did a Euro mount on him instead of getting a cheap shoddy shoulder mount. Yes, I hate to state it (because the cheaper guys are not bad people) but around my area if you don't pay around $450 or higher (the two guys I will only use are like $575 when all is done) you will regret it. I have a 6 year old mount that looks better than one my buddy just had completed this year by a lower end taxidermist. Ron's Taxidermy and Wallhangers are the only two places I'll take my bucks to...and that is based off seeing and judging their 10+ year old mounts and how their eyes, skin around eyes and noses still look amazing...when 10+ year old mounts look just as good and usually better than brand new cheaper ones the decision is easy for me.
However, I get the money thing and would highly recommend saving the cash and getting a good Euro mount done, cool wooden wall mount for it and be happy. Euro mounts do a deer much more justice than a shoddy taxidermist job that the eyes are messed up the nose is just black paste and all the hairs off the eyes and nose are gone from shoddy work. I'd recommend saving cash and spending the $50-$150 for a Euro mount done professionally or very slow simmer it yourself like I've done.
Cheap shoulder mounts are regrets...good Euro mounts are never regretted...well you may regret not mounting it legitly but that is it and that can always be done at a later date should money become available.

Sorry but price should not be an issued when getting your deer mounted. Most taxi's require 50% down so that gives you a year to get money to pay the rest !!

Most are less than 50 percent down. I still don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a mount. It's that simple. Luckily I have found a guy nearby to do it for a reasonable price. He said I'll have it back by thanksgiving and I saw some of his previous work and it was excellent.

I have around 40 different mounts and you can tell the ones that were done by a discount taxi. All of them are cracking around the eyes and nose from being overstretched. The other thing that would bother me is the quick turn around time. Is he just not that busy or is he rushing it out? 90% of mounts you get done are going to look from good to great when you pick it up. It what it looks like done the road that will separate the good from the bad.

Wish the cost was lower up here, shoulder mount for bear or deer is 500-550. My taxidermist charges $550 but you get them back in just a few months. He is somewhat new into taxidermy but won nationals his first time ever competing with a tiger. He has done fish, otter, bobcat, 2 deer and 3 bear for me (1 full size). Here is my son's first archery buck from last year.

i would be leary of a taxi with a 6 week turn around. the cape has to be sent out to a tannery. proper sized mannequins need ordered and delivered. alot of art goes into making a mount look alive.
six weeks.......?
mine cost 450. 50% down. got it back in like 7 months

I too would be leary of such a fast turnaround. NOT saying it isn't possible but every good taxidermist I know of is at least a 4 sometimes as high as 10 month turnaround. I usually never expect mine earlier than April even if killed October 1st and to him that evening. Also I concur, nearly every decent taxidermist work can look good when fresh. That is partly due to the fresh look but also partly due to our excitement...we overlook many things when excited....hence why they always recommend walking through a house 2 or 3 times when looking to buy on separate days you begin to see more and more.

We'll he said its in house tanning. He doesn't send them out. He also said he only take 4 to 5 during bow season. Maybe that's the reason for a quick turn around.

I do my own taxidermy work and a little for some friends. I do in house tanning also. If things work out perfect I can do a mount in a week. I have some of my own mounts that are 10 years old and other than dust look as good as the day I hung them. Most of the delay with large taxidermist is the fact they have SO many to do it is on a first come first serve bases. Some shops do 300 deer a year plus all the odds and ends coon birds turkeys and such.all take time and when u get it dune they guy that it goes to says I have to save up the money when they had 3 to six myths to have it saved all ready.. even my buddies

Be sure and ask the taxi if the cost is in cash or a check. You might be surprised.

I guess that I am very fortunate. I've used the same taxidermist for every deer I've ever had mounted, and have never paid over $300 for any shoulder mount -- and that's with a mounting plaque on each of them. There are 16 bucks on our living room walls as I type this. Last year's buck: My taxidermist Anthony Moore may not be a grand champion, but he's an honest minister who believes in doing his fellow man right. We've had a great relationship over the last 20 years, and I hope it continues another 50 years. www.withoutexcuseministries.com/anthony-moore.htmlwww.withoutexcuseministries.com/prostaff.html
