I recently purchased a new pistol and went up to sugar ridge fish and wildlife's area to shoot at the range. I noticed that they don't really have a short pistol range. They have a nice FREE facility that I can't complain about as I used it from time to time at the longer ranges. But I would love to see it improved with a few more short 10 meter pistol ranges and maybe a longer range in the 500 yard size on the other end.
I also took a trip down to Hovey Lake and was looking for the Hovey's HQ. All I found was a concrete pad where the HQ building used to be. They now have the HQ in a portable trailer down the road a ways from the old HQ building's remaining foundation. I spoke with the Property Manager and found out something very interesting from him.
He said that the Federal Government has about 25 Million Dollars that they could send to Indiana if only Indiana's legislature would fund more money into the IDNR. Spend some money and get a lot more money back from the Feds.
This money is from the Pittman Robertson Act and the Dingle Johnson act where sportsman's' purchases of hunting and fishing goods are taxed and the money is suppose to go back to the State F&W agencies. But evidently if the State's don't put up the Matching Funds then the State won't get the Federal Matching funds back and the Feds just keep it or give it to the other states!
We need to get the State Legislature and our Governor to try to fund the IDNR more so that they can get those Federal Funds.
25 Million Dollars would go a long way to improving the hunting and fishing in our State!

To keep you folks up on what goes on, volunteer hours and mileage on the part of volunteer's at DNR functions are now counted in a monetary way toward PR funds. Every time I do something for the IHEA, I have to fill out a form stating how many hours doing what, and how many miles I drove round trip to do that. Those figures now can be substituted for the DNR's matching funds. Tuesday I will do a shift at the IHEA in the DNR building, and next month will do two [2] days at the Ford HOE at Ft. Ben. Fill out a form for each of the days. Over a years time, that adds up to a whole bunch of hours and mileage. It's working out great! I use to volunteer a lot of hours to a volunteer Fire Dept for ten years and then for about the same time I volunteered to help the Civil Defense as an EMT. I did that for a long time. I got burned out after about ten years and don't volunteer time anymore. But if I were to volunteer my time for a project I probably would be more inclined to help our IDNR more than any other organization. But I'm getting too old now and have too many health problems to do much physical labor these days. I'm lucky to keep my own grass cut and yard work done.
I was not aware of the matching funds either until I spoke in person to the Property Manager down at Hovey Lake. He is the one that told me about that fact. So I'm going on what he said. Hopefully he knows what he is talking about. I could find out but I'll just take his word on it. I wish him better luck and hope that they can build a more permanent office for him and his successor down at Hovey Lake. They use to have a very nice building for their office but the flooding took it out.

New Indoor Shooting range may be coming to Evansville, IN soon. Uncle Rudies (Rudy's) may soon be built. I saw on TV tonight that they got their special use zoning permit. They will be located next to Tri-State Athletic Club. Pete Popham is the contractor/builder but not the owner. I'm not sure when it will be ready to open but it may be a couple of months. They still have to build it. They will have 10 pistol lanes and about 6 archery lanes. Parking for 40 vehicles will be required but they say that they have room for 54 vehicles.
Another new range opened up in Haubstadt, IN and it's called Right to Bear Arms. They have indoor shooting range for pistol and rifles. Range is 100 yard long with target holders that move from the shooters position out to the range. This one looks real nice too.
There are other ranges in this area but they are members only and most of them are full now.
