Wanted to see if anyone has ever done this and if so what size of chain did you use on your Lock ons. I have been doing a lot of reading on it but have yet to see the size, did find the grade of bolt (8). Several of the lock ons I had up in Indiana need alittle TLC.

Yep, I have done it but I sure cannot recall the size of the chain. Seems like it was either a #2 or 2/0. I just know the working load limit was around 500 pounds.

I need to do this with one of my favorite stands at my Metamora lease. The coating on the cables is fraying and I have detected some rust on the cable. Last year I reinforced the platform with ratchet straps in tandem with the cables, but I like the idea of replacing that with chains.

I've got mixed emotions about doing this. On a cable, even though it's made up of many strands, the strands usually go all the way from end to the other....break a strand or two and it won't make that much difference on safety.
Chains are made up of links that can be individually damaged-damage one link and the whole chain could become a safety hazard.

Most cables are enclosed though which makes them hard to visually inspect .... you can take a look at the chain each and every time you get in the stand.
I have been meaning to do this swap on several of my stands.
Ever been on a tailgate of a truck when the cables snapped? Not a pleasant experience .... cant imagine being 20' up a tree when it happens. A guy might closely resemble Wile E Coyote while trying to fly instead of falling.

!/4" grade 30 works well. I think it's around 1300 lbs load limit. 1300 may seem like overkill, but when your 25' up in a tree I would rather be safe than sorry

I will be connect them with grade 8 bolts, replacing the old bolts that are currently holding the old cables.

I cheated last year and bought a bunch of old school hang - on stands my local archery shop had. $15 each and every one has chains from platform to spine and a chain to hang it. Yes, they are heavy, but thieves will have to be dedicated to walk off with one. :-)
