One thing I dislike about evening hunts (especially bow hunts) is the prospect of blood trailing, tracking, dragging, and field dressing deer in the dark. Often, I am up against it time-wise on weekend hunts and killing late in the evening will either require me to miss church or work the next day if I have to come back. It's so much easier to get it all done in daylight Yeah, that's the problem with harvesting Deer in the evening. I once shot a Buck, during rifle season, that came out just about 30 minutes before legal hunting hours ran out. Since it wasn't all that far from my stand I took him, but he ran into a pine thicket. My hunting friend and I found him about 1/2 hour later and dragged him out where I could field dress him. My Friend got his pick-up and shined the head lights on the Buck as I field dressed him. After that we loaded him up and drove back to the house & hung the Buck up.

noon to 2 is in my opinion the best time to kill a big buck during the rut. I have killed several from 12 to 1220, Other than that evenings in my opinion. I just went and looked at the bucks I have on display, all over 125". 13 of them, 8 were PM kills, 4 of the 5 that were AM kills were gun kills. Im guessing if I dug thu the box of younger bucks I have killed it would even out pretty quick. BUT I would choose PM as well.

I seem to recall you killing two bucks between noon and 2:00 on the same day at Big Oaks. LOL! I remember that day also. a 134" 10pointer at high noon and a 131" 9pointer at 1:50, then got down and seen to 170"s and a 150" before 3. I still feel bad about that day M4, at least you got to see a bobcat.

I prefer an evening hunt over a morning, especially a Sunday evening that seems to be my lucky night of the week

I prefer 1 hr. before sun-up to 1:00-2:00 PM during the entire deer season. I have taken many good deer during this entire time-frame. The only time that I hunt late afternoon/evenings is when the morning weather is brutal. I've taken a lot of nice deer during my late afternoon/evenings too.

I agree metamorahunter, It's is alot better to shoot them in the am,but we have had our best luck in the pm after everyone gets them all excited and they come to our woods to hide out. We work very hard to stay out of the woods all summer so they feel safe there.
