I only have one option for a high powered rifle. That's my Rem. 700 .270 (inherited from my grandpa). Only one option, but that's a good option!

I would probably stick with my Savage 220. It's a shotgun that shoots like a rifle and I have made some great shots at long distance with it.
But I wouldn't mind getting one of my Garands out and taking a deer with it.

Either the 8mm Mauser 98 action safari grade euro style engraved hand custom Rifle my grandfather built in the late 1950s in his gun shop. It is gold inlaid and hand engraved with Stags on the Frame and a true Russian boar engraved on the bullet drop plate with polished and diamond machined chrome bolt flawless Grade A or the Springfield A3-03 action he also built in much the same pattern but the stock on it is American style palm's and fore arms with mid hight 65 line micro checkering .They have not been use in a hunt since the early 1960s and I have 3 of 20 he built .
He passed away 5 years ago and It would be my life's dream and honor to use them on a whitetail hunt here and maybe one day a Euro stag hunt . But likely my sons will still be waiting to use theirs they received when he passed and mine when I am gone here in this backward acting slow minded state .Sorry just some dreams will stay just that here in our state IMHO.
I have actually fired all these guns he built and can tell you that the Timminy set triggers they have on them are the most acurate HP rifles I have ever fired on the range with hand loads we are shooting sub 1/2 inch @ 100yd off the bags every time with good breath and trigger pull usually one hole clover leaf groups .He placed the load info for each gun on envelopes before he died and I have the reloader and the very same boxes of bullets he used and have started reloading by the pages he wrote for me .
BTW --I am not bragging in any way at all .I am just very proud of the guns and of my grandfather .He was a true craftsman who fought WW2 and raised a family and survived the depression selling vegetables out of the back of a truck as a young boy . He came from a time that required skills most do not have today to make such wonderful guns and if it was not right he would not have his name on it or allow it to exists beyond the time it took to tear it down and start over again until it was right .He built his own home and layed every piece of Bedford stone on it ,Just the type of man he was .

That 98 sounds sweet; I think it would to go just to honor his memory if nothing else.

OMG what is that MAGnificent 7? It is awesome!!! I need one of those in a handgun! I have had a passion in the high powered caliber handguns since they became legal. Been through a lot of calibers from 30-06, 308, 7-08, 270, 257 Roberts, 243, and 260 Rem. The 260 now is my favorite so I may try one in a rifle one of these days. Flat shooting, low recoil, tremendous accuracy and knockdown power from such a little round is fun to work with. Lately I have been enjoying the 45 cal PacNor on my Rem700 smokeless mz as my long range field gun, and the 50 cal Savage as my woods gun. So lots of choices and favorites! Hard to choose. Jay Jay, its a 7mm Allen Magnum. www.apsrifles.com/ I don't know if you'd see the performance in a pistol because of the barrel length. It shoots a 180g Berger VLD at 3350 fps in 40°F temps at 750' altitude. I have shoved 175g Sierra Matchkings 3495 fps (accurately - 1/4 moa @ 300 yds) and have pushed them as fast as 3550 (not as accurate). But I think the throat is starting to get rough because the 175g SMK's are going *poof* at about 40-50 yds. They hold together if I run them slower, but the accuracy isn't there. In Colorado this December, I ran it out to 1334yds and the 2nd bullet went into the dirt crater that the first one made. The rifle has a 28" barrel. Kirby makes long range pistols. One of his clients took an antelope at over 1,000 yds with one.

Guess it would have to be the Savage Tactical .223 as it is the only centerfire I own that is not already Indiana deer legal. It would take some load development because I would not be firing the varmint bullets I have loaded right now.

I've owned a lot of .25-06 rifles over the years, but no longer have one. Legalizing it for deer would be enough of an incentive for me to buy another.

I'd probably have to buy one but a .270 Remington would probably be it.
What's "in my safe" is what I use now - my Ruger .44 Carbine

No doubt here! I'd use my Winchester 88 in .308 simply because it has special meaning...handed down to me from my Father-in-Law!
