I need to get some feedback on the creation of a Youth Deer Hunting Day in Indiana. I've been working with a committeee to establish more Youth opportunities and this is just one of the issues we are working on. It won't happen this year but next year we are proposing a Saturday or week-end during or prior to bow season when kids can get out in the woods with firearms and take anterless deer.
OK. Whack away at the idea.

OK… here is my two cents worth..
Have a youth deer gun weekend the second full weekend of October.
That gives a bowhunter a full week or better to waylay that big buck he had been watching all summer. If he cant get him that first full week, then that buck has got his number and he probably wont be seen again until heavy pre-rut.
No one has to quit hunting becuse it is a youth weekend.
Regulations:
1) Youth has to be accompanied my an adult mentor 2) Mentor can not be armed in any way 3) Hunter must do all the shooting. 4) Hunter’s age is 15 and younger 5) ANY deer, not just antlerless 6) Hutner orange required for all hunters
Have a youth turkey gun weekend the weekend before the opener on Wednesday
Regulations:
1) Youth has to be accompanied my an adult mentor 2) Mentor can not be armed in any way 3) Hunter must do all the shooting. 4) Hunter’s age is 15 and younger
Have a youth squirrel gun weekend the weekend before the opener.
Regulations:
1) Youth has to be accompanied my an adult mentor 2) Mentor can not be armed in any way 3) Hunter must do all the shooting. 4) Hunter’s age is 15 and younger
I think you are doing a great thing..
Thanks..

I think it's GREAT!!!!!
I will try to find it...but when I e-mailed several years back about youth deer seasons, the response I got from the "old" administration was that there was not enough support for it and organized hunting groups were against it.
I hope the tide has turned!....But please don't get discouraged when you get some "heat" over this proposal.
As for the rules.....Why antlerless only? What reason do you give a child for restricting them to "antlerless only"?
I will assume that any youth will be escorted by a un-armed adult?....If so, will there be a H.E. deferment for this weekend youth hunt?...Can we "defer" the H.E. requirement if the adult escort is H.E. certified? Will one adult be allowed to escort more than one child at a time?....You know like a dad with twin sons?
Anyways it is VERY refreshing to have folks working on IMPORTANT issues like this instead of working to produce bigger antlers.......
THANKS! You work and efforts are appreciated!!!!

I think creating more youth opportunities is a fine thing , good on ya ! Good luck getting it to happen .
I would favor a youth hunt day just prior to the start of the archery season , with another just before firearms , but not mixing weapons . Archery gear for bow season , gun for gun . I also favor a relaxation of the crossbow restriction for youth to use them during the early archery season .

For the record Jack...... Am I mistaken to assume that IF this youth day ends up a reality....and ends up occuring during the early deer season, would ADULT hunters that plan on hunting with "regular bows"....still be allowed to hunt with their "regular bows" on the youth day? ? In other words........early season "regular bow" users would not loose one hour of hunting with their "regular bows"?....Am I right? I know in Kentucky there are quite a few folks who use "regular bows" that look forward to the youth firearm days down there. It seems that with the extra folks in the woods, it seems to get the deer up and moving creating additional shooting opportunities for EVERYONE. I think we all know how some of those early deer season days can get, with hot temps and the deer laying around all day long!!!!!

Good ideas guys. Keep 'em coming. I'll have some kind of an outline on what we will send to IDNR soon.

I like it! I like the second weekend of October idea as well.
All I would add is that as a bow hunter, it would not matter to me either way if we were allowed to hunt that weekend or not. I've got three months to hunt, I can give up a weekend. Besides, most generally, the duck opener is that weekend, so I spend at least half of my time hunting ducks then.
I would love it if I could get my girls out for a weekend with the guns before it gets cold and nasty in November. They are only a couple years from being old enough to do this, so I'm all for it.
I'd support a turkey weekend as well.

Thanks, Woody. Where do you think we stole a lot of our ideas? Kentucky.
As a reason for doing all this Youth stuff let me share some data with ya'll:
Changes in certified hunting licenses in 20 years (1983-2003)
Indiana -31.4% Ohio -13.4% Illinois -10.7% Michigan -3.0% Kentucky +10.4%
It doesn't take a genius to look at these data and conclude that hunting in Indiana is in big trouble.

Jack I know a alot of folks on here and other sites do make fun of KY a lot, but since I've become more involved in hunting in KY I can say they are WAY ahead of us in hunting. Thier programs are top drawer... A LOT more involvement from the hunters too..

Woody is dead on with his assesment on Kentucky!
Yes they do have regulations in affect that help with the production of big antlered deer.....but they also have their house in order when it comes to providing maximum hunter days, and choices!...They really mix it up down there with their early muzzleloading session, early youth session and expanded crossbow use.....Oh yea!....lets not forget about the largest elk herd east of the Mississioppi!!!!!!

So Jack...
What did your group decide in the way of a Youth Deer Hunting weekend??
Are you at liberty to say yet??

I can tell you that the group reached a consensus but it was not 100%. I would ask everyone to exhale and be calm. No one is trying to take from you we are only in this for the kids. Also don't tell me how people will cheat the system. Cheaters will always find a way. That said give me feedback:
Youth Deer Season 2006
1. Date - week-end before the start of regular archery
2. Weapons - legal Indiana firearms
3. Age - 15 and under
4. Must be accompanied by licensed hunter over 18 years of age. Unlawful for this person to hunt this week-end.
5. Anterless only
6. Must have youth hunting license and hunters ed card.
7. All other deer hunting regulations apply

IMHO...
I agee with all but #1 and #5..
I think the first or second full weekend after the start of early archery would be better.
That would give the bowhunter that had been patterning a certain buck to have a crack at him first.
I don't understand the thinking on "antlerless only". Are we teaching these kids to be deer hunters or antlerless only hunters?
I think you would get more responses if it were any sex. Of course any buck taken would count against their seson limit.
I appreciate all the work you are doing on this..

I was one of those that was for an "either sex" hunt. I listened to the arguments and believe we will have an easier sell if we start out anterless. That said it also teaches the kids that they have to be careful and selective about what they shoot. Also the surrounding states except for Ohio have their Youth Hunts Seasons set-up as anterless. It was pointed out that some property owners would welcome kids on their place to thin out does but might not let them on if they could shoot bucks. Going anterless can also be touted as another management tool for DNR.
The date we selected was the hardest part. Some wanted it before archery, some wanted it after, and some wanted it in the middle. The date was a compromise and can also be revisited later on. I'm in favor of after archery season but before gun season. It means pushing gun season back a week but so what?

Here is my view, id like to see it in the middle of archery season. That way it wouldn't take anything away from the bow hunters or the gun season. Make it the second or third Saturday and Sunday of October and allow bow hunters to hunt too. Make it an either sex hunt. Bag limit one.
Would there be a youth license sold at a reduced price for this hunt? H.H.
