My oldest son is into pistols but not hunting. He has mentioned a couple of times how he would like to get a replica black powder pistol as his next. So I'm looking to get him one for Christmas. AND I figure I might as well get one that is Deer legal so the old man can borrow it and add another weapon to the list of having used to take a deer with. ;D
So how about some opinions on a good shooter for the boy? No arm and leg $ guns please, I'm looking for entry level $200ish for the gun alone.
What say you?

Traditions make a 50cal pistol with a 13" barrel so that would be legal. I think they are more like $300 though.

Are Muzzleloading revolvers even legal for deer? I haven't looked at the regs yet. Killing one with one of the single shots would be the same to me as killing one with a Contender and Ive already checked that one off my list

Yeah, it would be pretty cool to be able to use them during ML season -oh well.

On another board there was a guy from a different state that used a Colt .44 Army. He said he was real picky on the shots he took. He had good success by doing this. If it were legal here it would give me an excuse to get a .44 Dragoon. 70 grains of 3f with a hard cast bullet should be good to around 35 yards.

I've thought about that new Traditios pistol too. But, the poster is asking about replica pistols. T/C made one called the Patriot I think. Other companies made them too, but I don't see many these days. Cabelas now has 2 traditions models that are replicas, the Trapper and the Pirate pistol, the trapper is the cheapest at 330.

I suggest making it a birthday gift foe next year and looking for a used one...I looked at them earlier this year and decided that $300+ wasn't a good price for an occasional use BP pistol. I even ;looked at doing a kit gun to save...oh no...over $200 for the ones I found because I wanted a decent barrel and not some cheap no-name.
Used they sell REALLY CHEAP...but difficult to find also. Most gun stores don't want them on the shelf because they are hard to sell.
