So I am thinking about getting a new MGM pcr barrel and I am considering the following:
- 44 mag (already have dies and TONS of bullets and reloading components)
- 41 mag (already have dies and reloading components)
- 357 max
Decisions....
The area I hunt is rolling and dense, so long shots don't really present themselves.

Jason, if I was to get a barrel made with current IN regulations in mind (and for my Contender), I think my choice would be for a .357 Herrett. I would have to shorten the necks to legal length (I believe SAAMI specs for case length is 1.7") but otherwise it would be like a slightly super-charged .357 Max. And .35 caliber rifle bullets aren't hard to find. ;D I have dies but no barrel at this point (along with a few other sets of dies that I don't have chamberings for!).
I think you already know it, but you won't go wrong with any of the choices you listed. You can easily load 357 max with regular 38/357 dies too.

It would depend on what range I would need to cover, if you are going to be inside 150yds the 41 or 44 would be my choice as you are already set up for them. If you are looking to go more like 200 then I'm with danf.

Definitely inside of 150 yards, so I will take a hard look at the .41 and .44. What would be an optimal barrel length for these 24"? I know a shorter barrel would have its advantages as well though. Thoughts? I am not ruling the max out yet either...

460 S & W nothing better out there. Simple matter to trim a bit off the cases, which might not be needed soon.

Out of those three I take the Max first, 44 mag and then 41 mag. You can get a 35 WSSM Encore barrel and ammo from Just Hunt if that interests you. His number is 260-563-7777 and ask for Paul. h.h.

I have an 18" T/C Custom Shop 44 mag barrel for my Contender. It's an absolute dream to carry, especially in the thick stuff. I haven't weighed it, but it's probably around 7 pounds, give or take. I had to add a homemade spacer between the recoil pad and the buttstock since the factory Rynite LOP is about 13.5"- way too short for my frame! To date, I haven't gotten a good load worked up for it, but it shoots WWB ammo (240 gr soft points) at about an inch or so at 100 yards as I recall. Recoil is a bit sharp with it from the bench, but I think that's a function of the weight- and I even added about 1/2 lb or so in the buttstock with the spacer to help with the balance! Keep in mind that all 3 of the rounds you are considering were developed for revolver use, so anything past 8-10" in length will only help the performance. If you are going for a custom barrel, I don't think I'd be looking at anything over 22" personally, and I'd likely be considering 18-20". An old pic, the spacer has been painted and the forearm finished since I took this one a few years ago:

This is my pair of 357Max's; the rifle is 20" which I like just fine.

While I was out, I thought...what about a .475 linebaugh in a 18" barrel? I could shoot 480 rugers through it as well...

Nope I'm wrong it's 8. The 475 would be fine, there is something to be said for different as well! However it sounds like the 41 or 44 would still get it done.

Well I just ordered a MGM 20" ss matte barrel in 41 mag! Should make for a nice, light option for next deer season and I may even try to hammer a coyote with this winter. I really like this round and I am looking forward to getting some more frequent use out of my Encore rifle with this barrel. I think 4 weeks is the "normal" turn around time, so we will see.
