Today I stopped in at Just Hunt in Wabash and talked to the owner Paul. Just Hunt has their firearms manufacturing license now and are making their own barrels for bolt guns. The barrels are Douglas and they can thread and fit most any make of gun. They have loaded ammo, dies, bullets, cases and any component needed for the .358 WSSM. They are now making an entry level .358 that is more cost effective which is based on the Savage Edge rifle. If anyone is interested here is their website. Read the FAQ section for more info. h.h. www.justhuntgg.com

OK, I'm ready to upgrade. But want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck. First question is with the BFG and WSSM being made to conform to 1.625 inches, is there any wildcat available made to conform to 1.8" instead. What gains could be had with the new length and is it worth the wait.

With the current wssm going on 4 or 5 years old I would guess it will remain the standard.
To many guns/dies/brass out there.
The 1.8 might get a bit more powder in the case but I can't see it gaining much. We can push a 225gr bullet over 2700 now.

I have an encore and a winchester m70. Encore is 1-14 and the bolt is 1-12.
The encore is much more finicky than the bolt but I think that is the nature of the beast.
I have yet to find a load the encore wont shoot 2moa or better.

If you already got the Encore frame then Id buy the barrel. Bolt gun gives you 3 shots, rest just one. I shot two big bucks and a yote last year and only needed one shot for each. BFG and 35 WSSM use difference reamer and take two different full lenght dies, seating die could be the same or just buy loaded ammo from Just Shoot. 358 Grant which is out of southern Indiana is also different reamer. Any way you go the ammo is expensive the first time around. I see no need to change this cartridge to longer length. Its coherently accurate case. Ive not found a bullet yet that wouldnt shoot with the 200 Rem SP being the pickiest until I used IMR 3031. Great deer gun for Indiana and if they ever pass high power rifles it still will be the ticket. h.h.

I'm not aware of any but I'm sure someone will come up with something. I don't think anyone can do much more with the wssm family of cartridges but I suppose one could push the shoulder back on the wsm or rsaum cartridges but i'm not sure you would gain that much ballisticlly with the small case capacity one would gain, probably about the same as the 358 Grant whick has a 40 degree Ackley shoulder. and it would be expensive--custom reamer, dies etc. If you go with the current offering and dont plan on reloading my recommendation would be a standard 358 wssm as the bfg uses a min spec reamer and wont chamber 358 wssm loads as far as I know. hornharvester can probably add more info about this as my rifles, a Mod 70 and an Encore are both 358wssm with a tight neck(my brother, FallCreek Custom Rifles); owns the reamer and did my build on the mod 70.

Not sure how it will compare to the .358 wssm. But there is a gentleman on another site working on a .35 rem short. Will name it .35 I-R(indiana regs) Its a rechamber of a maximum or magnum barrel. Uses trimmed 303 brass. Uses .35 rem dies to shape . Lonny Here is a link to the site. If I am not suppose to post it, please remove or let me know to. www.dandtcustomgunworks.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=5510103&trail=15

I have been wanting a .358wssm for a while. I actually sent an email to "Just Hunt" a while back about the pricing of an Encore barrel, dies, and brass to purchase, but never heard anything back.

Paul is a real nice guy to talk to. If I remember right his Encore barrels are some where in the $400.00 range, dies are 150-175.00, formed brass is about 1.75 each, 25wssm brass is about 45.00 a bag of 50. He sells loaded ammo but I can remember the price. The loaded ammo is 225 Sierra SP with H4895 powder. I believe he is closed on Mondays. PH# 260-563-7777 h.h.

I just got off the phone with Paul, open 10-5 every day except Mondays. He's been selling the Encore barrels as fast as he gets them in. Right now he has 2- stainless and one blued barrel. The stainless is $475.00, blued $425.00. He has some stainless fluted coming in Mon or Tue and they are $600.00. All the barrels come with MGM scope bases.
He has Rem 700 bolt guns for 1149.00, Savage 1149.00 all with blued actions, stainless Douglas Premium barrels. Stainless action/stainless barrel is 1249.00. These are in stock.
Formed brass is $90.00 for 50 rounds. Loaded ammo is $3.00 each for Sierra 225, 3.25 each for 225 Accubond.
Complete set of dies are $179.00.
If you are planning on buying one dont wait too long as the season gets closer he will sell out and who knows when he will get them back in stock. h.h.

Some smiths are working on a 1.8" cartridge based on the 308 case. These have been tested and will get around 2550 fps with 200 gr bullets. This is the way I'll go, as I already have a Savage in 308, and no mods other than a barrel swap are required.
