You are nicer than me.
I noted when down south in Carolina the Widow usually had no red markings on the top of the abdomen but of course had the red hourglass on the underside. The top was usually a solid shiny black.
The one I found in my boot ( ! ) here in Indiana, however, was similar to your specimen, featuring a red squiggle on top and the hourglass underneath. The shape of that spider is unmistakeable.
Mine was not immediately executed, but captured and sent via my wife to the entymologist (sp?) at Hanover college for his students to have their way with.
In my $#&*!?! boot! Yick!

I couldn't kill it. She didn't do anything to me and they aren't aggressive like a wasp or bee. It is in an old barn that is falling down. If I find them close to the house, I will relocate them to the back part of our place. Maybe if I ever get one in my clothes or boots, karma will help me out a little, who knows. Now, if I ever get bit by one, it's game on!

Nearly anywhere in the US there are about 13,000 spiders per square acre, most are completely harmless. Their niche in the environment is so important that if all spiders disappeared tomorrow the entire food chain would collapse. If spiders ever reach the size of a basketball humans would go extinct within a year, be glad they aren't.
