A neighbor of mine has a german shepherd that he lets run loose from time to time. The dog runs all over everyone's property.
The dog bit my 8 year old son a few weeks ago, not a bad bite (did not break the skin but did leave a small set of bruises from the canine teeth) but we were close and jumped the dog as soon as it happened.
I went and spoke with the neighbor this week after the third time the dog was spotted on my property.
I told him to keep it off my property and he agreed he would try to. I also sent a report of this to the local animal shelter.
The next time the dog is seen on my property law enforcement will be called.
I don't want to have to use deadly force against the dog but I will protect my kids.
Any ideas on how else to handle this situation?

That dog bit your son which could have been more serious. You warned your neighbor who isn't a good neighbor in my opinion. If the dog returns to your property try to capture it & take it to the animal control station. If this fails then terminate the dog. People should keep their dog contained on their property at all times, using a pen or fence.

Every dog get's its one bite, and it has already bitten your son. Do what is necessary to protect your family.

"I told him to keep it off my property and he agreed he would try to."
Should be no TRY to it. He either keeps it off or it is a dead dog.

The Dog has bitten once and I would assume he was back for a repeat bite unless the kid was wooling the dog Like I have seen kids do to dogs and then that would be different but if the dog just bit without any kid influence that would be different and I would deal with it acordingly

I agree..it could have been a lot worse. My son just knocked on their door to see if their son wanted to play and the dog came running out and bit him. Had the dog bit my son on MY property initially, I would have killed it on site no questions asked. When I talked to the neighbor, he said, "Well you son kicked the dog..." BS...what would you do to protect yourself against a dog that had bitten you in the past?? The Dog has bitten once and I would assume he was back for a repeat bite unless the kid was wooling the dog Like I have seen kids do to dogs and then that would be different but if the dog just bit without any kid influence that would be different and I would deal with it acordingly

Agreed. my overly friendly yet harmless golden retriever puppy was running off our property and digging up stuff and generally being a puppy. I put in an underground fence and put an end to it. He should do the same if he insists on keeping his stupid dog. I personally would never own a dog that was aggressive, one bite and they won't see the sun set again That dog bit your son which could have been more serious. You warned your neighbor who isn't a good neighbor in my opinion. If the dog returns to your property try to capture it & take it to the animal control station. If this fails then terminate the dog. Sounds like you have done everything you can. If it keeps up, do what you have to do. If any dog bit my kids, it would be dead. Even if it was our own dog. My kids are more important than any dog.

Ammonia in a squirt gun to the face and the dog will never come back. h.h.

in hindsight I really should have documented everything better...I hope there is not a 'next time' but if there is an attorney will likely be involved Every dog get's its one bite, and it has already bitten your son. Personally, I wouldn't waste my time or money with an attorney! One well placed 17HMR would be more effective and much less expensive. If a dog bit my kid, it would be a dead dog.(unless the dog was provoked) Kids will be kids.

. When my daughters were younger, we had a Dutch Keeshond that became "nippy". One day she decided to grab my daughter's arm and nipped the neighbor's daughter when they tried to get in the house. The dog was put down that day. Not worth the risk. Your neighbor is irresponsible and things won't get better. Been there with neighbors just like this. Time to engage the Animal Shelter and authorities. Hopefully they will deal with it so that you aren't left taking care of it.

I can't understand why anyone would have a dog that bites.......period !
I had my GSP for 11 years and 9 of them she was on hormone pills, they made her go crazy.....literally!
She attacked a house plant that was next to her dog bowl for several years, I guess she thought the plant was gonna eat her food. Then several days later she went after a buddy of mine when he went in the kitchen (where her food bowl was) to get a pop from the fridge......she didn't get him but it was very close.
I put her down the next day.
Now we have a sweet little Beagle that is 11 months old.

Therre should not be another opportunity for this dog to bite your son again... If the dog was to come onto my property after biting my child..... I would shoot shaggy!

Usually a few well placed land mines around the perimeter of your property will keep the dog out of your property as well as any Jehovah's Witnesses and various Riff Raff.
