Hello everybody! With my deer season ended, and a memorable one it was, I am now starting to think about long beards. I shot my first turkey down near Bloomfield last year however, that was my fourth year out. I have a box call and a slate call already but would love to get a couple of mouth calls. I know I have a few months to go but I really want to practice with them alot before season. Any suggestions?

Its all about personal preference. I like the knight and hale mouth calls right now, they all fit a little different you will have to just buy different brands and try them out to see what you like the best

Try a couple of different calls. I like the HS calls myself. The HS raspy old hen is an easy call to use. I bought a semi-custom last year I like too but I don't have the name handy. Get an instruction video and audio too. A recording of real turkeys like Cody's is great to practice imitating different hens. Carry them with you everywhere and get used to having them in your mouth. I practice on my trips home from work. Don't give up too soon either.

I prefer Primos myself, but whatever you get make sure you get calls that have a metal frame so they can be bent and shaped to your mouth. I tried the plastic framed calls that could not be shaped, and I could not make a turkey sound to save my life. Slightly bending the frame (high pallet I assume?) made all the difference. Well, that and practice practice practice.

All I've used for the last 6 or so years were Hooks or calls made by Hooks under different names. Scott Hook is a friend of mine, is a great guy and probably the most consistant mouth call maker there is. The guy makes thousands of them a year (probably more like 20,000) and every one of the same model that you get is going to sound the same.
A word of warning though. On Hooks calls, he uses a slightly smaller frame. Most people like the smaller frame after trying it. Indyhunter, you might give them a try. Or have you ever tried a youth model mouth call? One website that I go to has a lot of adults using Scotts youth models. Bending a metal frame is never recommended on a mouth call, but if you can get a good sound that way, I guess it works.
Give him a call and let him know what you are looking for. He either has it or will make it up for you.

The commercial calls like HS and Primo are good. I perfer the Primo A frames. Now my second commercial call I like the best is the Quaker Boy foam tape. Starting out they will gag you a bit. Try just making noise at first then start trying for the turkey sounds. On line or commercial CD will help too.

Ok next questions. I went to both hooks and primos web sites and there is several styles of mouth calls. I like using my box and slate calls for the longer distance calling so wht i'm really looking for is a mouth call for the up close and personal action like some putts when the hen acting goofy with my dekes and some softer yelps.

That's the beauty of a mouth call. With a little practice, it can be ran at almost any volume needed to locate and call in a turkey. I say almost only because you will probably find your box call louder, but that is not needed when hunting east of the Mississippi.

I'm absolutely looking forward to the challenge of trying a new style of calling. The guy I was hunting with this past spring when I got my bird was doing all the calling with a mouth call. I was amazed how he seemed to be having a conversation with the gobblers from a distance and he even seemed to get into an argument with an ol' grumpy hen when she came in. I just hope I can find that same sort of success with whatever I choose.

I got the "Champions Pack" from Hooks Calls. I love the yelps they make but haven't figured how to do much else with them.

Stay with it, I was the Same way, and Now I am pretty good, I would think that I can work a Bird though. Yelps and Clucks, and now working on My tree yelps, Learned a neat trick from reading on Old Gobble.com was taking some material to siulalate wings flapping, on birds flying down, or scratching in the leaves searching for Accorns also. Keep at it....
