How in the world does ANYONE know how many BB's are killed in a given year? Its a made up number. A guestamation at best. The only Fact from this entire thread, is how many bucks where killed. No in fact when you check a deer in there is a place on the regester book that seze Button Buck .That is how since you are supposed to check them in after you kill them and claim the sex and button buck have these neat little buttons on thier head so its no hard to tell .LOL How accurate do you actually think that is?? When 90% of check stations don't bother to even look at the deer. I have NEVER been asked or heard anyone ask if its a button or a doe when checking in.

They look or rely on you as the hunter to tell them .What is the reason to lie about killing a doe or a button buck when there is a chance at getting caught by just a look ?? I have never heard them " not " ask what sex and tag ever .It will be very accurate as in by the chance of probability by your theroy there would be as many not dissclose the truth the other way as in a DOE either its a wash in the real world.

Uh unless the hunter is filling out the info in the book (which is illegal) and they don't ask if its a button or not, they will get "its a doe". Face it a BB is a doe. If you doubt me you can look over the hunting book u get a wally world every year.

a doe is an antlerless, a bb is antlerless. a spike with less than three inches is antlerless. All checked in as an antlerless deer.

Honestly, none of the rule changes will create a higher doe harvest, which will cause a herd reduction. I am not a biologist, or anything of the sort. I'm a simple country guy that grew up on and surrounded by farms. It's simple math, it the 5 sows drop more pigletts than the family can eat in a year you slel the rest or butcher a couple of sows. We can't sell the deer, so killing the does is the option. One season of anterless only would greatly, if not severly, reduce the deer herd. The numbers of "button bucks" taken would age and gap the buck herd and the doe harvest would reduce the number of "new additions" to the herd the next year (several) and reduce the herd size. Isn't that what this whole change is about?

Female harvest rates of 30% generally lead to population growth, 40% stabilizes or moderately decreases population size and 45% generally leads to rapid population decrease.
Straight from the DNR!

I can probably buy into this as percentage of harvested does to total herd does, but not percentage of harvested does to total harvest. The only issue would be getting anywhere close to an actuall number of live does in the herd, let alone a total herd count.

It was a percentage of harvested does to total harvest. BB were counted as does. I just read and relayed the info, the DNR was the one who put it all together for a report.

Not that.....this: Female harvest rates of 30% generally lead to population growth, 40% stabilizes or moderately decreases population size and 45% generally leads to rapid population decrease. Can you post a link to that info to qualify it?

If this is on a DNR report, then they don't look at their own data very close. Isn't there data posted on this site where Indiana has had approx. 50% female to total harvest? Our herd has not been reducing.....

Have no idea if it is posted on the Net, looking at a handout that I requested from the DNR a number of years ago, entitled "INDIANA'S DEER HERD MANAGEMENT - Balancing Conflicting Perspectives" with a date of 7/22/98. There is a lot of information in 7 pages that give an insight into what is being proposed now, and how it came about, that might or might not surprise a lot of people. It may or may not cast a shadow on the "major stakeholders", and how much influence they had on today's proposals. I've been at this game for a long time, but I'll let someone else make a call on that one.
