I recently guided a hunt for a fella living in Vigo County. He sent me this pic of a dead feral hog found in Parke County. Supposedly, a man named Alan Moore found this hog while hunting sheds. Does anyone have information on this? I would like to know where in Parke county the hog was found since I hunt there. I guess the find was reported to the BOAH. I called them but they would not give me any information.  |

Is the guy sure of the origin of this picture? It seems weird that he wasn't all chewed up.

All good points guys and I have some of the same questions. At first I thought the pig looked a bit small. But, once I compared it to the oak leaves in the pic, it seems to be a fairly good sized hog. Growing up on a dairy farm (and we did raise some hogs on the side), it seems this dude has a bit coarser hair than or hogs. Like you Woody, I wondered if it might have been a "domestic" that got loose and went wild. Hard to tell from this photo. I'll make a few calls and see if I can find any more details.

I've made a few calls to find a bit more from my source of information. I also left a message with District 6 Biologist Dean Zimmerman's office. We'll see what kind of feedback we get.

I got an email early this morning. The fella that I guided a hunt for says he knows Alan (who found the hog) personally. The DNR is supposed to be on site today to do some verification. The location is west of Rockville on Hwy 36 but he did not give details yet. I'll keep ya posted...

I got a call back from Dean Zimmerman's office and they said to contact District 5 Hqtrs in Cloverdale. I called them and they said no report had been filed as of today. However, if the CO was called to the site yesterday or today, they may not see the report in their office until sometime next week. IMO, This looks more like a "domectic loose in the wild" hog. We'll see what happens...

Well, my buddy emailed me and said "Alan" called the DNR and they wont be out until sometime this week. I'm getting a little more skeptical of this being a feral hog as time goes on. But hey, we'll see...

Not sure why, but it's like pulling teeth to get the DNR to respond to anything round these parts..Too busy hunting and fishing I guess....?

I got a call from Dean Zimmerman, District 6 today and he said they do have the report of the possible feral hog in Parke county along with photos. At this point they feel that the hog looks more like a "rangey" loose domestic hog than a true feral or wild hog. He was very informative and I agree with his assessment. In cases like this, they monitor reports to see if more sightings occur. After all, if there are others, it wont take long for more sightings to be reported as they proliferate. He did say that there was an increase of rumors/sightings in the SW portion of the state within the last year or so. I guess we'll see what happens as the years go on.

I got another call from Steve Backs with the DNR in regards to the possible feral hog sighting. Steve was very cool and told me he handles all the feral/wild hog sighting for the state of Indiana. The case in Parke county has been noted but they do not confirm it as wild at this point in time but he is continuing to interview. They expect that there will be more calls as turkey hunting comes in if there is truly a presence of what he called "sounder" groups out there - basically sows with pigs. Steve said there have been rumors of sighting for at least a few years in Parke county. Enough that he is taking the reports seriously. So far most reports have been loose domestic hogs and 4-H pets let loose and gone rangey.

There is an Amish farm right across the road from Alan's farm. I've had to chase their horses down before that were in the road. I know where he lives (he's killed some really nice deer!), I'll try to remember to stop by and ask him. As of today, this is the first I've heard of it. Evidently DF&W did not let us (L.E.) know about the call......go figure!

A couple years ago while doing a night-time coyote hunt I spotted an animal moving across a field at a slow speed. I am 99.9% sure it was a hog, after asking around the neighbor has a pet hog they let roam the fields at night. Glad I didn't shoot. This was on the east side of parke county though about a mile from the montgomery line a couple miles due west of waveland.
