When I shot mine, I kinda felt bad, not giving him a chance to grow up. But it was near the end of the muzzleloader season, my very first time hunting and only available day that season that I was able to hunt. Like my neighbor said, "Shoot, get the kill and enjoy the meat, or take the chance on not getting anything this year.
If it was early in the hunting season, I'd have probably not taken the shot and let him live.
Nothing of him except the bones went to waste. I got all the meat possible, the skin is hanging up tanned on my wall as a poster/picture and the skull I bleached and have in a plastic model display case under the poster. Figured that would make an interesting trophy for my very first kill.

He could not have gotten a better honor if he had grown up and became a monstor ten pointer. Congratulations.. ......and shoot what you want to shoot.

Shoot em ALL! ! Lifetime licence sez I can and move from county to county doing it! WOW......wasn't that the same attitude at the turn of the 20th century? Uh, NO they didn't go from county to county or place to place doing it so there would be some left. I have yet to kill enough deer to feed the family for a full year. Unlike some hunters that leave the ONE deer they kill in the frezzer for a year, then give it away or throw it out...... We eat our deer! And BTW it has been awhile since I've killed a button. This year was 3 does all derssed out at around 100# and we're down to 2 1/4's and a little ground meat already.

In order to have a more natural herd you should only kill the young and very old. In nature prime age animals are almost never killed by predators unless they are sick.

Now that is honoring your kill. Like Woody said that is just as good if not better than mounting a 10 pointer. Maybe even better. You honored him when it was not really the thing to do.

what is all this honor bullcrap? 99% of the people that hunt, don't hunt cause they have to. They hunt cause they love to, for the same reasons fat people like to eat. Its just what they do.

According to Merriam-Webster, part of the meaning of honor is: [glow=red,2,300]One whose worth brings respect ....[/glow] I hope all of us respect (honor) the deer we pursue.

Something inside naturally makes me pause for a minute to pay a bit of homage before field dressing. Be it buck or doe. Young or old.

Sorry lug, but I do honor every animal I kill.
I always give thanks to the good Lord above for allowing me to take one of his creatrures.

I thank the Lord simply for the opportunity to take an animal at the end of every day in the field. If I harvest one, I feel really blessed. The deer I am the proudest of taking is far from the biggest one I ever took. You did good retiredmn1.

saying thanks to the good lord is completely different than "honoring" a deer. The gentleman that took the button buck, isn't honoring the deer, by keeping its skin or its skull or even by eating every bit of meat on the deer. He's keeping the skin, and skull as a conversation piece and a reminder of his first kill, in which i think is an awesome idea.
Their is no honor in killing gods creature for pure pleasure, like most of us do.
BTW, woodmaster their is a big difference between respecting and honoring something/someone.

Lug, I disagree with you. You have no idea how this man thinks. What he honors or how might be completely different than the way you would do it. h.h.

Back to the original subject. There is nothing wrong with shooting whatever you want as long as itis legal. Congrats to retiredmn1 on your 1st deer. May you have many more enjoyable hunts!

I'm only going off of what he said in his post, read it. Woodmaster, which side of the fence are you on now? One minute it bothers you that button bucks are getting killed, and the next post it doesn't bother you a bit what one kills. Aren't these your exact words: Does it bother you or doesn't it? I'll wait for a response after you look it up
