This board is set up and hidden from the general membership.
You have been given the url because we would like to get everyone that is to be helping or mentoring's input on the 2009 Youth Hunt to make it the best experience we can for our Youth Hunters.
This is a board where we can discuss "how we are going to do this" at. Timex has done this before, but this is a new endeavor for me, so I need you all's help..
Please add any thread that you think is appropriate. We welcome all suggestions and help. We would like to make this a joint effort of helpers and mentors. So, don't be bashful if you have an idea or input.
A BIG THANKS TO ALL!
WW

What time are we going to meet-up Friday?
We probably need to exchange cell phone numbers in case someone has a hard time finding camp & of course emergencies.

I'll be there bright and early that morning to do last minute incidentals. It would be good if the mentors get there as soon as possible Friday afternoon so they might have a chance to see some stand locations.

BTW - I am working on a "goody bag" for each hunter. I've got some committments from a few manufacturers - mostly for hunting type caps. If any of you all have any contacts with any outdoor manufacturers or outdoor stores that would care to donate please hit them up.
Thanks..

I took a personal day off work for Friday so I will head over to camp early Friday morning.

I have a large aerial photo of the property and have the stand locations marked on it. We'll let people pick their own stand and then make sure they can find it. Woody has some stand lights that we will install to make it easier in the dark.

I've invited Steve Griffin (hunter7X) over here to give us some input.
As some of you are aware Steve does the Freedom Hunts for youths. He is the resident expert on the youth type hunts. He might see something that we are missing.

I dont know the proxmity of your mentors verses where the hunt is going to take place, but we have found it is extremely helpful to have the guides/mentors help with the stand set up. They seem to take "ownership" of the location if they help set it up verses just hunting someone elses location.
I also made it mandatory for the guides to get with their hunters before hand to shoot and to get to know the kids a little before spending the day in a blind with them. Knowing the hunters abilities when a deer or turkey is standing in front of them is very helpful. Ours is somewhat different as we have lots of physical and mental issues to over come.
I do exactly the same with the aerial photo and stand locations. If the guides dont know where they're going it helps and also helps in knowing where other hunters are if they're sharing a piece of property.
Have you thought about meat care after a kill? This year we have a walk in available on one of our new properties but in the past we took them to a butcher who would hang them but not butcher them until Sunday after we had our photo session.
I have a guide meeting Friday night before our hunts. In it we talk about obvious things (obvious to most) like gun safety and making sure to encourage the kids to stay as long as possible but dont force them to stay. It has to be fun for the kids not so much for the guides.
I also limit shots to 35 yard broadside only shots. This might seem short yardage but I dont want any wounding losses. We set markers at the blind locations so the guides know where 35 yards is. We are shooting all 20 guage slug guns, I dont know if you are shooting rifles or whatever but a shot length might be something to think about.
We also make it mandatory to remain in the blind for 30 minutes after any shot is taken. Most of us know better to get out immediately but we lost a deer that was shot on film when the hunter and his dad wanted to get out and look for it immediately after the shot and the guide went along with it.
I dont want to offend anyone so please take this with a grain of salt, but a lot of the above things we do mainly because of the egos of some of the guides. We have found that when we ask an expierenced hunter to be a "guide"...several have become overbearing in believing they know more about hunting than anyone else in camp. lol By giving them pre set rules about length of shots, staying in the blind, things like that, they seem to accept it as its just the way we do it here no matter if thats the way they do it or not.

LOL Im excited for you guys! If your like us after its over you will find many many things that could have been done differently and better for everyone.
The main thing to remember is the KIDS need to have a good time.

One more thing i just remembered...i have a lot of things in my head and not sure what is good input for you and what is not...
At the guide meeting and during the general welcome for EVERYONE in our camps, I make sure everyone knows they are NOT under any circumstances allowed to step foot on the properties after our events. I even go so far as to tell them not to even ask permission from the landowners. I tell the landowners the same thing, if anyone asks or comes there to let me know and they wont be asked back to any of our events. I know Timex's property is a little different but it might not hurt to make it crystal clear.
