Common sense dictates I agree with oldhoyt on this. For those who disagree, that would mean that before you begin your hunt, you walk a circle around your stand position out to the maximum range of your firearm and walk a zig-zag pattern back to it, checking for any stands, blinds, or folks sitting at the base of a tree. What about that ground pounder who may silently sneak into your area after you've conducted your sweep? I'm sure you give out a loud warning yell just before dropping the hammer to give notice of your intentions? If you claim the advantage of hunting private property and no-one else should be there, that doesn't make the person you shot any less dead. It's impossible to be 100% sure of anything, all we can do is strive to be reasonably certain that we are being safe. If you carry the safety factor to the nth degree, you won't be carrying a firearm period.

To me the only way a person could be 100 percent sure of what is behind the deer is to walk down behind the deer to take a look. However if the deer would stay there and wait for you to get back into your shooting position the ground pounder may silently sneak in behind. Then is it possible to be 100 percent? Just making a point and I am a firm believer of safety and taking all the precautions to satisfy your mind. I am with huxbux and oldhoyt on this one.
