Yes, I would have really loved it 1 yr. ago. Because I own/handload for a Marlin Guide Gun. Having said that, I bought a Marlin 1894, .44 mag, and used it last year. Straight walled cartridges, like the .45-70, .444, and .450 would be ok in my book. I've used the .45-70, in Tenn., Texas, Idaho, and South Africa. I'd love to legally take a whitetail with it, here in Indiana. At least 15 years ago [maybe more] several of us were attending a lot of meetings up in the statehouse and elsewhere concerning new and old rules. A very few of us kept bringing up the possibility of legalizing the use of rifles for big game [yeah, big game] hunting here in Indiana using straight walled rifle cartridges. At first you would have thought we were advocating child molesting. The more facts we brought up, the more believers came on board, but politics ruled the roost as always. OMG! Rifles, it will result in a horrific number of deaths and injuries due to the increased _________ [fill in the blank], the same crap that was on this and other boards just before PCR's were made legal. The fact that short to medium range cartridges were made legal was a blessing [we figured that the big boys would probably never make the cut]! This sounds like the current STIMULUS package, get something going and then start adding on your personal wants. I and a very few others were working on this before all these forums were even in existence, and am very grateful that Kyle Hupner dug the old information up and brought it to the 'Guv's attention. It took a very, very, long time to get the PCR on board [how many of you gave testimony at the NRC gathering at Attebury concerning the PCR?], give it some time before trying to put some icing on the cake. While we are at it, let's get a 4 buck rule going, 6 month archery season, no gun hunting during the rut [not that anyone can accurately predict that on a yearly basis], telecheck, center fire rifles for turkey [they do it in other states], let's start bait piles so we won't have to hunt for deer anymore, just wait for them to come to you. Flame away, I'm getting too old and tired to get involved in a pizzing contest.

Seems like alot of bias towards the 45/70 here. Mostly from folks that have obviously never owned, shot, or reloaded for the caliber. Savage smokeless muzzleloaders are legal, and are capable of much higher velocities than my 45/70. Alot of inlines will beat the velocity of a 45/70. So,,,what's the big deal??

I have no beef against it. Like I've stated before, the inclusion of the 45/70, .30/30, etc, will cause more issues with the writing of the regulations (and therefore the interpretation). Our regs are hard enough to understand as it is- we don't need more feet muddying the waters!

I see what you're saying. But I aslo think folks should know the ballistics and velocities of "said" guns before condemning them. Some of the modern shotgun slugs are above and beyond some 45/70 loads.

Some of the modern shotgun slugs are above and beyond some 45/70 loads. Like I said... it's not about ballistics in this case. Its about Cases and Regs. Not getting the Brush Cartridges/BPCR cartridges was art of the faustian bargain to get PCRs. It was hard enough to get those what with the "no rifle no how" crowd screaming at the top of their lungs/working with the Antis to keep us Shotgun Only...

O.I. I think I now understand what you are saying. After thinking about this for a couple of days I realize to start at one cartridge and say every round greater than that would be a nightmare to enforce/interpret. What seems simple to me may be downright confusing to others. Thank you for the input. It is too bad this thread got hijacked and sidetracked the way it did. I still vote for the 45-70.

Didn't understand why we needed PCR's,(in which really made the laws confusing) but hey if it can get passed, more power to em!
