It's getting close and my son is getting excited.
We will be leaving as soon as he gets out of school on Friday and heading down to Brown County. We will have a buddy of my son "Kyle" (Kyle is on an apprentice license, and has squirrel hunted with us several times this year) with us and a buddy of mine and his daughter will meet us there Saturday morning. Another buddy of mine who's boys are too young to hunt (2&3) will be mentoring my son and I will be mentoring Kyle
We will camp and deer hunt all weekend, fishing and shooting bows may also come up. I think I heard they are expecting highs of 80s next weekend. If one of our youths kill, we will have to get it checked and quartered and put in a cooler asap.
The pic at the bottom of this post was last years youth hunt, the two boys on the left are too old this year, the other two are my son and my buddy's daughter.
This will be my son's last year for the youth hunt but we plan on hosting youths for the youth hunt as long as we can.
What are your plans?

I am hoping to get my son out a few times. I set up a ground blind yesterday on a very small woods that is connected to other woods. Not able to take him to where I shot the buck that I posted. I put a ladder stand leading to a field that the deer were using back in August but the farmer plowed the field.

I'll have my little processing shop set up in case my friends grand son scores. Otherwise just watching and hopefully reading some success stories. My kids are too old now.

Will be heading down to Switzerland county for the third youth hunt at JB's farm... 6-8 youth hunters expected...
I agree with Camby... if temps are as high as expected, we're going to be hauling ice to get the does cooled down ASAP...
Although I understand the logic of IDNR setting the youth weekend before everything to let the kids have first crack at the deer, I wish they could have set it up for the week or two before gun season when temps are more moderate... I think we're going to be sweatin' to the oldies down south this weekend...

TTH- let me know if you think you may need help. I should be around home most of the weekend if you need an extra hand. Send me a PM and I'll get you my phone number. IIRC, you hunt near Russelville? I'm around 10 minutes from there....

Camby - same to you and yours...
Chris took a little one last year... had a group run by on either side of the log he was sitting behind 'a la Jurassic Park... got excited and didn't see a bigger doe standing to the left of the one he took... we're gonna work on taking a mature one this year...
As hot as it is, bet they'll only be moving first light or just before dusk, unless movement kicks them out... or heading to water...

I cannot wait until I can take my son hunting during the youth season. He still has a few more years before we can go though. Good luck to all the youths and thanks to all the mentors taking them out.

Everyone be safe and have a good time. Remember that the actual taking of an animal is just frosting on the cake and the hunt...well, that's the cake.

I'll be taking my son Chase out Saturday morning, setting in our buddy stand swatting bugs, sweating our butts off, and loving every minute of it!
