I don't think anyone should be handed any government funds that are not to be repaid, regardless of financial situation.

There's a big difference between financial aid and a government sponsored "free" education.... Yep, real big. Aid should be available to whoever needs it. I'm in total agreement. I'm not at all surprised that Bayh pushed for this program. Income redistribution is a basic leftist tenet. It's how the Dems "buy" their votes.

My son got financial aid too. But none from the Government. He had to pay what he used back. Since you say that this is federal then it had to be instituted after Bayh got to congress. I would bet that he worked in collusion with that woman senator from Ill that filed bankruptcy after graduating from IU. So she would not have to pay back her loans.

Who knew there was such vehement opposition to federal financial aid for education? Some might be surprised by this but 76% of undergrads at 4 year public schools receive financial aid. Source: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, National Postsecondary Student Aid Study: 2003–2004 Maybe just maybe it is because some of us actually live within our means: we don't take second mortgages to finance a life style we can't afford and than whine and cry until the gov't bails us out; we don't max out our credit cards and than file for bankruptcy; we believe in working for what we get; we teach this to our children; we only ask to be left alone and don't mine paying our fair share. What gets us is when we are asked nay forced to pay ever increasing taxes to support the gov't hand out bonanza.

We in the 25% paying the bills for the entire 100% while we work 7 days a week and my kids go to tech the first two years because it's cheaper while dead beats and welfare cheats send their kids to IU and others on my dime, we dispise it. I hate it. It's plain theft.

The only difference is the amount of aid that is recieved. We have a need based financial aid system where those with the most need recieve the most financial aid assistance in the form of state and federal grants, scholarships, and government backed loans. Some will recieve enough financial aid to cover 100% of their education but most do not. Yep, real big. Aid should be available to whoever needs it. Most of that "need" is a need for a kick in the arse. Get a job. Get two jobs. Tell me about need when you are the same hours as the people getting robbed to pay for that education. Half these college graduates have their head so far up their butt when they do graduate they don't have sense enough to cover their own crap.
