I killed this ten pointer this morning at 11:00 am. I had shot at him last night at 130 yards in a standing corn field after watching him feed through a standing bean field and thought I got a good hit. He muled kicked and then disapeared in the corn. I got down and looked for blood, but could not find any in the fading light. I met with a friend and we went back with flashlights, but still could not find any sign.
This morning I met with 3 friends and we went to look for him. We found a lot of hair at the site of the shot, but could not find blood anywhere. After 3 hours of doing grid searches, we decided to do a short one man drive. I knew where the main bedding area was, and figured we should try that before stomping through it. I got in a tree stand and my buddy walked the back of the woods. He pushed 15 or 20 does by me and the buck. He gave me a good 40 yard shot. After looking at him I saw that I barely hit his neck last night. We went back to the shot site and found a cornstalk blown in half at about the right height. I was thrilled I didn't have to go home knowing there was a wounded buck in the woods.
I had passed this buck up the last weekend of shotgun season because I had become obsessed with a giant 10 pointer that I had seen. I would guess he is a 170 plus deer, and you just don't see them very often in Indiana. After seeing this deer one other time the opening weekend of muzzleloader I decided I would shoot him if I got the chance. I'm glad I did. He's a nice buck, he grosses 146 2/8 and will net close to 140. He will look good on the wall with a 19 in. spread and good mass.
