178 yards? Who made your range finder, Beijing International? Were you using a .30-06, 270 or what? Muzzleloader? I'd say muzzleloader but it looks like it was shot more then 1 time....so I'd say .338? Whatever you shot it with, that is one heck of a trophy and I'd be proud of it!!!

Oh come on!!There are plenty of 200 yard muzzleloaders out there and who can honestly says what distance another hunter shoots is "irresponsible as well as unethical"? Ethics are VERY personal and if psychobubba can make that shot who is anyone else to judge HIS "ethics". .

Ask that dead deer if he thinks the shot was unethical. Looks like a clean kill to me.

Ethics MIGHT be personal if on a sliding scale-and it`s just my personal opinion, but just because the media salesforce says a muzzleloader is accurate and has the foot pounds of energy out to 200 yards, come on..... are you serious? These animals deserve the best, quickest, most humane kill we can make, and shooting like Daniel Boone in the wild wild west doesn`t cut it. I`ve said it many times before, and I`ll say it again-legal doesn`t equal ethical. Again, only my personal opinion-but had a buddy of mine taken that shot, without being extremely proficient at it, we wouldn`t be buds any longer. .

You ethics are yours alone. To assign your ethics to someone else is not right. Especially when it comes to what distance to shoot an animal
As serious as a heart attack. There are a bunch of muzzleloaders out there that will kill cleanly to 200 yards and beyond. Because it is out of your self imposed range or the range of the muzzlelaoder that you shoot does not mean that no one else should shoot that far.
Do you see the hole in that deer? How much "cleaner" do you want it to be? I'll bet he dropped like a sack of potatoes and never wiggled.
.
That is very true. In this case the legalities is there and psychobubba seems to know what his gun IN HIS HANDS will and will not do. For you to assign your ethics to him is "WRONG".
There in lies the rub. You are judging psychobubba without even knowing if he is "extremely proficient" or not.
If psychobubba had posted -"I cant seem to shoot a 5 inch group at 50 yards but I downed this deer at 178 yards THEN you might have a right to say that the shot was "irresponsible as well as unethical."
Looking at pscobubba's past posts he seems to be well versed in the art of muzzleloading.
All I've got to say about his shot is "Great shot and good eating".

If you don't have anything nice to say ... just keep your mouth shut and that is exactly what I'm going to do. This amoung other reasons is why I hate gun season more and more each year.
You can either shoot real well or got real lucky. Congrats either way.
