I know their aren't any regulations on hunting from the ground during the firearm season. But is it really safe? I understand that not everone is able to be perched in a tree, but i think something needs to be done. Especially on Public property, where your not 100% sure where everyone is hunting at. Todays firearms are more deadly than ever before.
Just think of the different dangerous situations you could put yourself in, when hunting on the ground with a firearm with other hunters in the woods or fields in or near that area.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Lug

Lug-I voted that the current regulations are fine-my reasoning being that-while it`s absolutley true that safety has to be paramount while hunting, it`s a slippery slope when we begin to ask for even more regulation. And what would you propose that any new regulations would be?
At some point-the government has to stop being responsible for us-and we need to be responsible for ourselves and our actions. And again, I whole heartedly agree that hunting from the ground can be a touchy situation during firearms or muzzleloader seasons, but I feel we need to police ourselves in this instance.

Not just no , but HECK NO!!
Since most people killed or injured while deer hunting are from falls from a treestand the state would want to make someone get in a tree to gun hunt? If a person is not in a tree, it is a good chance that they don't like heights and stay out of them for that reason. Now why would the state want to mandate such a thing?
Trade a relatively safe thing for something more dangerous?
As daworz said -"We dont need No More STINKIN rules."

I voted no also. 95% of the time I hunt from the ground with a gun. There will be no one who tells me to hunt differently there.

I agree as well that the current regs are fine.
What happens when someone is shooting uphill and there's someone in a stand that otherwise would have been on the ground? Same situation. Changes in topography negate elevated positions....
I do WAY too much hunting from the ground during firearms season to support any changes that would affect that. I don't think my father has sat in a deer stand in nearly 10 years, good luck getting him up in one now! I like the mobility you have from being on the ground.

I voted leave it alone. Although I have trouble with heigths I hunt from tree stands. Have ever since some fool poacher pulled up to a woods I was ground hunting on and started blasting with a 30-06. During firarms I use a ladder, yes it limits my mobility, but with all the cloths that I wear to stay warm anymore I doubt if I could get my Lone Wolf to climb. My motto Up is Safer.

I'm from Ontario and there is no regulations here on ground hnting except we must where a certian amount of blaze orange. Not sure of the square inches but I've been told a vest is fine. Luckally I hunt private land and have only once had guys come on to the property.

We are regulated to wear a simple Orange hat.
BTW you shoot up hill and the bullet will travel the same height as if you shoot down the hill, or across a flat.
Still doesn't seem safe to have several hunters sitting on the ground on the same property with weapons able to shoot 200+ yards accurately. Then again maybe i worry to much about the other hunters, heck it would help me considerable if some of the hunters got thinned out in my neck of the woods!
I would NEVER in a billion years have a child sit on the ground next to me in firearm season, well at least not in this part of the country!

I have to vote NO. As others stated too much regulation is not a good thing. We need to take personal responsibility for our actions. I hunt from the ground because of my son. I want him next to me until he is a bit older. This means that I don't hunt opening day, I don't hunt coward public places (all I have is public lands), I have called a hunt before it started because of the number of parked cars/trucks along the roads. This also mean I have to choose the location of my ground blind carefully .... it's up to me to understand the situation and adjust to the realities of the situation instead of having someone, who maybe has no ideal about hunting, tell me what or what I can't do.
Yes this means my son has a lesser chance of getting a nice Buck .... but there is always "next time".

I've never even heard something like this even suggested before. Seems plum crazy to me. If it's crowded and dangerous where you hunt, move on.

Actually, I believe that a hat is not required, but what is is an article of clothing that is visible from 360 degrees. A hat just happens to fit that bill (no pun intended) and is the most common. I know what you are trying to say about shooting up/downhill, but what I was referring to, but just didn't elude to the fact, was someone sitting on a stand just over the break hill, inline with a shooter shooting uphill... Probably 75% of my deer have been taken from the ground and I doubt that will ever change.

I understand alot of you hunt from the ground, and thats fine. I've taken several deer from the ground. And i've missed several deer from the ground, and thankfully the lead never found its way into someone else that was hunting as well.
You guys cant tell me that its not more dangeous hunting from the ground on the over crowded public properties, compared to being perched in a tree.
I'm glad to see that all of you are comfortable on everyones ethics, and shooting skills.
Steiny- i don't hunt alot of public lands these days, but i know alot of folks do, and i'd hate to read in the paper about anyone getting injured due to someones irratic shooting.
Using myself for an example, i've jumped and killed deer walking to and from my hunting area. I never thought twice about who could be hunting from the ground in that area, i suppose i think about it more now as i get older.
You can never have to many regulations when it comes to safety, if were up to me, it would be against the law to be in the stand without a safety harness, but thats just me.

I have never hunted public ground. 90% of my hunting (up until 4 years ago) has been on family ground in Tippecanoe County. Since we moved 4 years ago, it's been more like 40% our property, 40% family ground, and 10% property of friends. If I did hunt public ground, depending on where and when, I think I'd be wanting to be up in a tree. On private ground, I'll be up or down- wherever I want. Lug- About 5 years ago, opening day of shotgun season, I was walking out of the woods at dusk. Some punk kids were shooting a .22 on the next property over, and the bullets were whizzing overhead. Fortunately, I was in the creek bottom walking out, with a ridge between me and them. However, had I been sitting in my favorite treestand at the top of the ridge, I would have been in-line with the bullets and I might not be able to debate this with you!

Lug,
Why would someone want to get in a spot where it is more dangerous? Falls kill more deer hunters than guns.
If we had such a stupid rule (and we already have enough of them) then we would lose deer hunters. A bunch would quit first before they would climb a tree.
