I have a question for the hunters who appose the OBR .... do you consider yourselves trophy hunters or another type? This questions is not meant to stir anything and I dont want anyone to read any more into it that the actual question. I support the OBR and consider myself a trophy hunter. I will not take a buck with a bow smaller than 140 gross (or a close on the hoof guesstimate). I had gone 5 years without harvesting a buck, gun or bow, until last year. I guess the OBR never bothered me because I have not run into the problem of killing a buck early in the season and then having to sit out the rest of the time (for a buck anyway). One reason I ask this ... my partner fully supports the OBR ... AND he killed a very nice buck opening evening this year. It is KILLING him not to be able to hunt anymore (again, for a buck). So, just curious .... are you just apposed to the OBR so you can have the opportunity to possibly kill more than one 1.5 year old basket rack or are you concerned that you can only kill one mature buck each year. If you had 2 tags .... or 3 ... would you shoot 2 or 3 immature bucks if given the opportunity? It`s been said multiple times-even several by me-but part of it is the principle of it-we never should have had the POTENTIAL to kill two bucks per season taken away to satisfy the wants of a couple of certain hunting groups in the state. This was not a herd health issue-it was simply the trophy management from a small, organized, very vocal group shoved off on every deer hunter in the state. Read the numbers-the same number of bucks-and MORE, are being killed than pre-obr, so regardless of those who support it and what they THINK, the silly obr has made zero difference-other than divide hunters, and take away hunting opportunities from ethical, lawful hunters.

Sorry, I get defensive when asked or accused of killing two 1 ½ year old bucks a season. That was a drum beat loudly by the pro side since day one of this fiasco.
If your question was – “if you had 2 tags .... or 3 ... would you shoot 2 or 3 immature bucks if given the opportunity?”
I answered that.
I said – “I hunt for a mature specimen - male or female.”
I also said – “There are some of US that love to hunt just gnarly old bucks and will be satisfied with nothing less. The number of hunters that wont kill one, much less two, 1 1/2 year old bucks grows each and every year."
I haven’t killed a 1 ½ year old buck in 20 years or better. I wouldn’t start now no matter how many buck tags I have in my pocket. I also believe that a large number of deer hunters feel the same way and that number is growing each year.
A lot of us are like you. 140 is a good goal if it is antlers we are after.
Tell your partner the day that it will come down on him hard will be opening day of gun season.

AND ... I have never and will never be a "why did you shoot that little buck for ...." kind of guy. I choose to hunt my way and I let everyone else choose to hunt their way. I hunted for many years and killed the first decent (and sometimes not so decent) buck that came along. I made a personal choice to hunt a different way now. I do what I personally feel is best for our deer herd. I take a few does each and every year, let all immature bucks walk and try to take a mature buck. I agree. I do the same. Now tell me - The DNR said that the OBR did not make a significant difference. Why should they take away a second buck tag from you and me and your partner? It is not needed.

[glow=red,2,300][/glow] Get real dude. Have you ever killed a buck? If you get the same satisfaction killing does then why kill any bucks ? "Its the quarry".......LOL........LOL............ I would guess that I have shot more and bigger bucks than you would possibly imagine and if I could learn how to post a picture on here, [glow=red,2,300]I'll be glad to post the last deer that I shot when I get him back from the taxidermist. [/glow]Guess I just have more respect for the wildlife than you. Nothing to be ashamed of though. We all have different degrees of respect. I do think however the likes of Fred Bear among others would probably be quicker to join my side and if I'm looking for someone I'd rather have the respect of, I'd guess you know where I'll be leaning. How many does did you get mounted since they are both the same to you ?

Whoa, whoa, whoa-that`s a lot of lookin` down your nose there partner-you can`t say that some other person has less respect for the white-tails than you do. Just because they have a different perspective and preference in their hunting? It`s not a matter of respect-it`s simply a difference of opinion, which everyone is entitled to, their opinion that is. This is an extremely emotional issue, and an extremely divisive on as well, and I hope the rifts can heal with just a little bit of time-but it`s not likely when some are already asking for antler restrictions, and some take a condescending attitude towards other hunters.

WOW!!
I promised myself not to get pulled back into one of these OBR "debates".
A couple of you guys are getting a tad too personal in your posts.
Attack the other's arguments without any put downs to the other person.
OK?
I appreciate it....
TIA...

THIS IS STUPID.
Here we go again, another fricking OBR debate. Can't you people stick with the original intend of a thread? This thread was started to discuss possible outlets for hunting a second buck under the current system. This means, urban zone, refuge, military, park hunts, etc.
STICK TO THE TOPIC AT HAND. We've debated OBR in countless OBR threads that go 10 to 15 pages long of mud slinging, name calling, and crying (from both sides). Give it a rest already!

Yes ... opening morning of gun season will be tough for him. He is begging me to hurry up and kill a buck so we can team up and harvest some does on camera.
Im sure the day will come .... and it will be an interesting day indeed ..... lets say I kill a buck during early archery season. In the following weeks I man my bow to harvest a few does and the buck of a lifetime comes along ... and I mean the buck of a lifetime. Ethics and game laws say I cannot shoot it. But wow .... that would be tough.
I would like to see a second buck tag .... but only if some sort of restrictions go along with it. Qualify for the second tag only after harvesting a doe ..... or second buck has to meet some sort of antler restrictions.
I dont want to tell someone they cannot shoot a spike or a forky if they want to .... there are too many hunters who dont have the opportunity to shoot bigger bucks or just dont want to. Young hunters ... public land hunters .... some of my friends who work long hard hours and dont have the opportunity to spend extra time in the woods.
Now .... I wouldnt want to restrict them from shooting one young buck but if a second tag were available I would like to restrict them from shooting two.
One big problem we have with herd management is my fathers "generation" of hunters. My dad, who is in his late 50's, will not shoot a doe. For any reason. I personally know several guys just like him. Many of these guys will not think about shooting a doe but they will shoot the first buck that walks by them.

Swilk, in answer to your question, I do not consider myself a trophy hunter in the contemporary sense. I prefer to hunt mature bucks regardless of antler size and couldn't care less about what they score.
By quirks of fate and circumstance I have never killed a 1.5 yo buck and see no reason to ever do so at this point in my hunting life. I've only taken one 2.5 yo and the circumstances of the hunt made him as much of a trophy as the older bucks I have taken.
I am probably one of the few people on here that actually has a doe mounted and I certainly enjoy hunting does. However, it is like someone else said earlier, if you've seen one doe you have pretty much (with a few exceptions) seen them all. Each and every mature buck is physically unique, not to mention more of a challenge. I hunt does for meat, but it is the encounters with mature bucks that fuels my passion for hunting.
I have never killed two bucks in a season before, but I have killed a nice buck early and spent the rest of the season hunting for another one. Without the opportunity to hunt the second buck I would have still gone out and hunted until I shot a couple of does, but the excitement, the passion for the hunt would have been gone. I would have simply been going through the motions.
The biggest problem with the OBR is it took opportunity away from the group of hunters that already tended to be the most dedicated and selective group to begin with, for no good reason. We traded opportunity for the quality we already had. Indiana has always had big bucks for those willing to devote the time and develop the skill to hunt them. That has not change either way since the OBR, but now we have less opportunity to hunt them.
