I was shoveling what little snow we had last weekend and shortly afterwards, something went terribly wrong with my back! I have had severe pain in my lower back and problems walking for the last week. I finally went to see a reccomended chiropractor (sp) and he took x-rays and everything to see what was going on. My spine is curved due to multiple disc being dislocated in my middle and lower back, I also have arthritis in my left hip and pinched nerves in my lower back that keeps causing my legs to go numb. What a way to end this season! The worst part of all of this is that I am only 26!! I am too young to be in agonizing pain and unable to lift anything, including my 20 month old son! Wish me luck on the road to recovery!

Yes, I have a bum back. Not so bad as yours--yet, anyway. Recently my leg has been getting hot, like I dipped it in bath water. Very strange. I understand it is a classic sign of pinched nerves. My legs go numb if I sit just right.
I pray you are better soon.
ALL THE REST OF YOU FORUM GUYS THAT HAVEN'T SCREWED UP YOUR BACK YET ---- drop the He-Man B.S. and get somebody to help you lift that heavy stuff. Trust me, it's a good idea!

I feel for you . I've had back problems for years. Sounds like yours are much worse than mine though. Wish I had listened to the "oldsters" advice when I was young about taking care of mine, but what did they know, right? Anyone who has nagging back pain, no matter how slight, needs to look into it, before it escalates into something debilitating.
Hope you can come out of it okay jajwrigh.

This may actually justify a need for a 4-wheeler in the future if I improve and want to avoid reinjury...

Ive had a bad back for over 25 years and had 3 different surgeries on it and will have another one in the future. I deal with constant leg and hip pain on my right side. Its a 24-7 thing and gets real old at times. The last operation was a bone fusion of my S-1, L 3-4-5. They took a 6 inch piece of bone off my hip and used it to shim the vertebra in my back. I now have scare tissue grown around the nerve in my back and they cant take it out or it will grow back worse, so they told me I had to live with the pain. I take narcotic pain medicine daily and that too gets old as it makes you feel like you've got a hang over.
My advice to you is seek alternative treatments other than surgery. There is a device that holds you by the ankles and inverts you upside down and suppose to align the spine. It takes the pressure off because you are up side down.
I went threw several chiropractor treatments and they worked for a short time but the pain always returned.
Good luck to you and I hope you get better but you probably wont ever be the same. h.h.

REAL good advice about the he-man stuff - I picked up a male St. Bernard when I was 28, now I am 55 and am still paying for what happened. Get somebody to help you with anything that even looks heavy

Back Problems. OH yeah. Fused lumbar from birth defect and not straight, very bad flexibility, could not even touch toes in high school. Easily spasmed, pain down left leg, pinched nerve. Chiropractor helps for short period. Bottom line do not pick up anything heavy, get help. If climbing hills, carrying tree stands hurts, do it in moderation, DO NOT drag a big deer alone. Macho Man is foolish man, GET HELP.

Bulged disc, genetic settling. Can't lift a deer into my truck safely without help. I went down a couple days after shoveling snow this year. You got to be careful what you do or it will get worse. The "he man" stuff is over for sure.

herniated c-7...2 bulging discs in mid-back...2 bulging discs in lower back...and yes i played he-man but at 38 im paying for it badly......constant pain, numbness, tingling and 40% loss of strength on my left side.....very hard to sit in a deer stand which is the worse...osteo-bi-flex and fisol fish oil by natures way is the only thing that keeps me off pain meds.........i refused operations as i have seen the results of what happened to others

Why a chiropractor and not some sort of physician with an orthopedic specialty?

I have had back problems for 5 years now, started off with rupturing my L5 disk, did some permanant SI nerve damage on the left side. Fell in July at work, could hardly walk, now I have 2 bulges on my L5 disk, plus the left side nerve damage, as long as I do not do a lot of bending, then I can do ok, still having problems from this last fall at work, plus they are messing with me at work, so I really do not know if I will still have a job, even though I am still working, they still need to find something for me to do that meets my permanant restrictions. Wife went out and bought me a 4 wheeler this year to help with deer hunting. I wrote the Patoka Wildlife area manager about letting people with back dissabilities be able to use 4 wheelers for transportation on the federal property, I do not know if that will work, but they should make all of there hunting areas accessible for people with dissabilities. So I will see if they will let me use my 4 wheeler on the property just for transportation. But I went to a Summit climber,a goliath and now I can sit all day in the stand with out my back hurting. I am 41, and as soon as I am released from workers comp, I will seek some laser surgery to try and eliminate the 2 bulges on my L5 disk, only if I am a candidate for the procedure. But Back pain sucks, even more so for hunters. I have yet to take my boys out duck hunting during the holidays, it is killing me not to take them out to a place were I do not have to pack the decoys out. my buddies pit is all flooded, so that is out for me also, but I will try and get them out somehow. But you might try Vax-D, I have friends that swear by that, I may have to look into that also. I do strecthes every morning to help keep the pain to a mininum. Hang in there, and take it easy.

Oh yeah! Started when I was 16 years old, playing basketball, went up for a rebound, came down on both feet stiff legged [stupid, but it happened], had extremely sharp pain in lower back for years, chiropractor was the only thing that kept me walking, had trouble getting out of bed for years, finally figured out how to pop it back by myself, hasn't bothered me much for years now. When my son was getting into soccer, he wanted me to rig a backstop so he could practice kicking, had some old plastic construction fence I could string between two trees in back yard. Hmmm, I'll just climb up like I did when I was a teenager, STUPID! Jumped up to grab first limb so I could swing my leg up, something gave way, spent next three days in a recliner, extreme pain, screwed up about 3 or four vertebrae, now have breathing problems, seems one of those pinches a nerve which causes false signals to my lungs. Lungs think there is some kind of foreign substance in there, air sacs naturally close up to protect themselves [kinda like smoking a couple of packs of cigarettes a day], sinuses swell up, have to sit down sometimes after just climbing up the stairs from the basement. Try dragging a dear out of the hills of southern Indiana, or go elk hunting at 10,000 feet in the mountains of Colorado. Chiropractor is the only thing that keeps me going, but also keeps my wallet on the lite side. Lifes a , and then you die.

To say that I have back "problems" would be an understatement. I have barely been able to walk for the last 30 days. Some days are better than others but as of today I am walking around with my upper torso parallel with the floor. I'm in bad shape and it isn't getting any better. And with all of the heavy pain killers and muscle relaxers that I am on, half the time I am either sick to my stomach or hardly able to stay awake. I am 35 and have dealt with this for a few years. I have degenerate disk disease, spinal stenosis, one protruding disk and two bulging disks, plus my disks are starting to crack and break apart from what the doc has said.

Why a chiropractor and not some sort of physician with an orthopedic specialty? Cause orthopedics make their money by operating and that will be the first recommendation they make. h.h.

Hope you get to doing better!

all you younger he-men....you do get older..when you hit your 30,s the discs in your back naturally decompress.......therefore the ligaments around the muscles by your spine get looser........most people with chronic back problems also have bad posture which has stretched the ligaments/tendons even more making those muscles that support your back even weaker....most people with bad backs also have very weak abdominal muscles which support your mid-body...ab muscles need to be strong to support the mid-body,weak ab muscles are what causes slouching/bad posture....all you youngsters keep your ab muscles strong...6 packs are not only attractive to the female species but are vital to keeping your back healthy.....because i have weak back and weaker ab muscles i now have a 7 inch long ventral hernia which is very rare for someone who has never had surgery on their stomach. just wondering of all you guys who have disc injuries how many are slouchers/bad posture people?

They had me go through therapy at work, and then a work conditioning to help build the abdominal muscles up and the back muscles, keep them strong and they say it will help.
