Below is a letter from Kyle Hupfer asking for our support for Mitch Daniels' re-election campaign. I can honestly say that more has happened favoring sportsmen in his administration than in any other. Hopefully some of you can join in and help Governor Daniels in his bid for re-election: All:
I want to thank you for the support that you have shown Governor Daniels and the DNR over the past three years. Hunters, anglers, gun owners and outdoor enthusiasts from around the state have supported Governor Daniels as he has directed some of the most significant positive changes that have ever been witnessed by these groups in Indiana. The Governor has a big announcement on June 16th from 11:00am to 2:30pm at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University. This is a FREE family friendly event that will feature in addition to the announcement, games, music and food. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.
This is my personal request that you and any other hunter, angler, gun owner or outdoor enthusiast that you know attend this big event. Some of you have already agreed to come, and I appreciate that. I would ask that you send this email to all of your friends, members, hunting and fishing buddies--basically your entire email list--- and post it on any website that you control or visit. Please forward this invitation along.
In less then three years, the Governor has seen to it that (i) the state acquire Goose Pond, (ii) hunting opportunities for all be expanded, but especially for the youth of the state with a free youth hunting weekend, youth deer season and youth turkey season, (iii) law abiding citizens be able to carry concealed with a permit on DNR properties and while hunting, (iv) homeowners enjoy extra protection while defending their homes through the passage of the castle doctrine, (v) the Atterbury range be completely rebuilt to provide vastly expanded shooting opportunities and (vi) our DNR properties be as clean and safe as any in the country. In addition he has fostered a more wildlife friendly forestry plan, developed and is implementing a statewide trails plan, expanded trail riding opportunities for horseback riders, balanced and strengthened the fish & wildlife fund and ensured general funding of the Heritage Trust for the first time in years. This list is still just the tip of the iceberg, but it shows that the hunters, anglers, gun owners and general outdoor enthusiasts of the state have no better friend then Governor Daniels.
This is the ground floor of a potential second 4 years for the Governor. We want to ensure that our voices are heard along with all the other constituent groups that will be out in force on the 16th. This is our chance. To further highlight your support of all things outdoors, if you come on the 16th, please try to identify yourself with a CAMO hat, shirt, etc. Let's make it clear to Governor Daniels that we appreciate his efforts to improve the state for hunters, anglers, gun owners and outdoor enthusiasts and that we want these issues to remain in the forefront during his next term. Thank you in advance if you can attend this monumental event. If you have questions or want to let me know you plan to attend, feel free to email me at khupfer@hotmail.com. Looking forward to a sea of camo on the 16th.
Kyle J. Hupfer

I would need far more than just sporting issues and an endorsement to consider voting for anyone, their overall track record is vastly more important.

birddog, I think the plan is for it to have lots more factories and taco stands once our Man Mitch gets done paving a bunch of SE Indiana so the Mex trucks will have a way to get to Detroit. The factories will be on the Mexican wage scale, the trucks will be safety inspected in Mexico, and the drivers will be licensed there. But we may be able to sell them diesel fuel.
We may need to switch to whatever time zone Mexico City is in, so they don't have to check their time zone charts to see when their shipments are arriving. But it will be good for business.....and eventually you'll get used to eating lunch at sunrise.
I'll probably vote for him again, too, but only because the Democrats will likely find some left-wing John Edwards-wannabe gun-grabber to say the same old stuff they always say.
I really like Mitch as far as his sticking to his economic ideals of leaning the government down some and I really do appreciate the second amendment improvements.
Can't say much for Playlike Saving Time or a 4 billion dollar highway to get to the other end of the one that already goes there now ten minutes quicker, and tears up thousands of acres of cropland and hunting woods forever doing so. Kinda scary to think what measures he might think are good for the economy in a second term, when re-election would definitely be out of consideration.
Now if Kyle wanted to run, and if he talked like he'd favor running the Detroit-Mexico highway down 41 from Terre Haute where it belongs (for less than half the money and almost no enviroment loss), and maybe even consider letting Hoosiers vote on whether we'd rather have noon happen sometime near midday like it used to, year-round, then I might get more enthusiastic.

Now some of that is funny, but unfortunately I thing that the NAFTA belongs to Bill Clinton and not Mitch. The trucks, drivers, belong to the new federal immigration crap. Now the play like savings time is definitely his and a joke. And I too think that they should utilize 41 out of T. H. for the NAFTA. Because taking the NAFTA down thru where they are planning is going to cause the loss of ten maybe hundreds of thousand acres of wild animal habitat that will never be replaced. As for voting. Choices will be poor. Which do you want the frying pan or the fire?

He has done a lot for my personal enjoyments, but working in the field I work in has been frustrating with Mitch at the helm.

He's given Indiana the first balanced budget in over 8 years, while erasing the state's $600 million dollar deficit he generated a $300 million dollar surplus WITHOUT raising taxes.
The Major Moves investment has created over $100 million in interest alone in less than 6 months. I've yet to hear the first complaint about how the toll-road has been operated since the lease began...despite all the negatives toward this idea that put Indiana into the black. Indiana is the only state that has a fully-funded 10-year transportation plan because of that deal!
Honda, Toyota, Cummins.... 30,000 new jobs by companies relocating to Indiana or expanding.
Renegotiate contracts so that over 85% of Indiana contracts go to Indiana companies and service providers.
These are just the fiscal benefits since Mitch was elected.... just 2 years worth of work has fixed decades of bad deals. Give it some time.....Indiana being in the black will only make this state better in so many ways!!!

the toll road gave us money up front, but how much is the company that now controls it going to make in the future??

the toll road gave us money up front, but how much is the company that now controls it going to make in the future?? They will make a lot more than the state would have, but the state will also make a lot more than they otherwise would have. The bureaucracy of our state government prevents it from doing anything efficiently or cost effectively. It isn't too difficult for a private company to make a profit doing the same task the State of Indiana is losing money on.

Pre-Mitch Daniels: Indiana paid $6 per stapler
Post-Mitch Daniels: Indiana pays less than $1 per stapler
Indiana has saved over 46% or $3.1 million annually, on office supplies! Just a small example of the waste that was eliminated once he took office. This state CAN run effeciently if the right man is in charge like how it is NOW.

Thanks for the post...
Environmentally, Mitch has kicked @$$ when compared to the past liberal regime:
1. Resolved backlogged enforcement actions
2. Resolved NPDES (wastewater) permit backlog
3. Resolved CSO LTCP (~raw sewage in streams prevention) backlog
4. Resolved air pollution non-attainment issues in many areas of the State
5. Increased pollution prevention programs--the key to reducing pollution before it is pollution
6. Actively went after chronic polluters (that loser in Terre Haute, DeGroot, etc.)
The tree hugging libs couldn't do these things from '86 to Mitch, but somehow Mitch did, strange???
BTW, I've personally been doing environmental monitoring beginning in middle school and continuing until today, and I'm 40 y/o, so I feel qualified to comment on Mitch and outdoorsy related stuff.

I will just say there are plenty of reasons I will be voting for Mitch.
But I won't blow the sunshine up his @ to make him look like the he is a miracle worker. He pays his outreach people plenty for that job. He just came in and ran the State like a company. We needed it drasticly IMO.

I know that Mitch wasn't responsible for NAFTA. That was a bipartisan turkey that goes back a ways and carries plenty of blame for both parties.
I agree that Mitch inherited the I-69 project. I notice he didn't kick it to the back of the closet, though. He seems to have fought for it every bit as hard as the former administration, maybe harder.
He does so many things in a business-like manner and cuts through so much BS, and I do appreciate that part of his record. I also think I'd like the guy if he lived down the block or worked in the same department. But some of the ideas he has pushed just don't ring true no matter how much slack I try to give them.
If we can make the other departments of the state government work like a business and be cost-effective, then why not keep the toll road and improve the efficiency by implementing the same measures that the foreign company will be using, and charging the users the same fees that they'll be charging? That company will be making a profit while paying the state that money, why couldn't the state make that profit with the same rates and business methods? It just doesn't add up to our benefit unless you accept that the state is incapable of running a business, but then what is Mitch doing in all those other areas where he turned things around?
Then there's the time thing. I remember when I was a kid and we had DST. Took Dad about five minutes to reset the clock on the mantle, the one on the kitchen wall, and the watch on his arm. Now I have the digital watch, the computers, the digital clocks in two rooms and three vehicles, two VCR's, the answering machine...and I don't have time-controlled thermostats or a coffeemaker that comes on automatically. When I get all done, there's still the same number of hours of daylight as there was the week before, but the kids are waiting for their bus in the dark again, the fast-food joints are closing before I can stop for a bite to eat after a day of doing anything outside until dark, and it takes a week for everyone to get their body clocks re-adjusted from the artificial jet lag effect of a shift in their routine. Might be worth it if we actually gained an hour, but not if we just saw it off one end of the day and nail it to the other.
I understand it was good for business, though.....especially the golf course business. I have a hard time imagining much advantage to any other high-tech business dealing with other parts of the country and the world. The ones in Arizona seem to be dealing with their lack of Playlike Time just fine. I guess they must be smarter than Indiana businessmen. Hmmm...
As for bringing the economic benefits of life near an interstate to the poor hillbillies out in Hoosier sticks......I know a lot of people who live near me that used to live in the big city. They moverd here because they wanted to live further from the smoke and the traffic and the crime and the high taxes and the other "benefits" of economic development. And I didn't settle here because I couldn't FIND Indianapolis.....I'd been there to visit, and wanted to live here also.
Another thing about all that economic advantage....check the figures to find the poorest county in the state, with the lowest rate of individual income. You'll find it has an interstate running squarely through the middle of it and has had for quite a number of years. If you think that's a statistical fluke of some kind, check out the next ten poorest and see how many have interstates running through a significant portion of them. They used the fact that the highest economic activity areas in the state were in the counties with the most interstate mileage, and that's true as far as it goes, but they neglected to mention that those areas were the business and manufacturing centers back before there were any interstates, too.
Everyone wants a Manhattan income with a Mayberry lifestyle. Doesn't happen that way. The dollars are fewer and further between out in Green Acres country, but there's compensation in other forms, like knowing your neighbors and half the folks in town, and being able to go out to the best restaurant in the county for about twice what a stop at a burger joint costs, and you don't need to pay for valet parking. And Floyd will cut your hair down at the barber shop for WAY less than the $400 some folks pay back east.
As many have pointed out, we all do owe him for the help on second amendment issues. That's no joke and no sarcasm, and I agree completely. I'll probably vote for him again based mostly on that.
But some of the pigs he's trying to sell us still aren't very pretty, even after all that lipstick he and his cohorts have slapped on them.
That may be what ticks me off the most....the way they just keep coming up with excuses for these projects that make very little sense, and selling it to us like a used car, expecting the rubes to swallow all that fertilizer like it was the truth. No worse than the stuff we've come to expect from the other politicians over the years, I guess, but no better, either.
