I have never really heard of him before this .... but every time something like this happens the Reverend Jackson and company start screaming RACIST!
This double standard is much, much more than this incident.

The Double standard is really wrong, He should not have said what he did. I have heard far worst from many Rappers and celebrities. But you do not hear A.S and J.J. demanding a boycott or firing of these persons.

He was commenting on the womens NCAA championship basketball game ..... and the Rutgers players in particular.
He said they looked like hard woman ... they had tattoos and stuff ..... then he called them "nappy head ***".
Im not saying he shouldnt be fired over it .... because he should be IMO. I am saying that if he were a black man in the same position and saying the same thing nobody would have batted an eye.
But because a white man said it the Reverend Jackson was picketing CBS and yelling like he always does.

Anyone know what he said? He some unkind things about the Rutger's Women's basketball team that was the NCAA runner up.. Double standard? Possibly, but I'm not sure. I have heard that rappers and some black comedians use that word quite frequently. I wouldn't persoanlly know as I dont tune any of that in. Have we come that far in in allowing the use derogratory type lanqauge that an aging white radio jock can use it and actually think that it is funny? Where Imus screwed up is that his words were directed at individuals. A team of individuals that had just done what no other Rutger's team had ever done. He made derogatory remarks based on nothing but their color of their skin and how their hair looked. That doesn't give the rappers and black comedians a pass because they aimed their remarks at non-individuals.. The whole world should hold all individauls to a lot higher standard than that. Imus got what he deserved.. I don't have a lot of use for Sharpton or Jackson either.

Sure he crossed the line, but that was his job. Thats what brings in listeners/money. Why wasn't he fired immediately afterwords? a week has went by before he got canned.
I heard what he said about the Rutgers women, and in my mind he painted a picture of what they looked like. And when i seen them all on ESPN they looked exactly like he portrayed them as.
If ya look like trash, and get called trash don't be surprised.
And if the truth hurts............Change!

I could care less about Don Imus other than he does run a camp for sick kids. His big mistake IMO was running to A S instead of going right to the girls for a face to face apology. A S, J J and that goofy Shabazz guy are nothing more than race P##ps who have made a fortune stirring the pot (Would have said something else but it is a family site).

I don't think the network fired him for what he said, he was fired because all the advertisers pulled out from his show. I've personally never watched or listened to him, so I could care a less that he got fired, but you guys are exactly right. If that came from the mouth of Chris Rock, it would have been looked at as funny!
In radio and TV, if you run your advertisers off, your sunk!

Much like Howard Stern, Don Imus is a "shock jock", in fact he's the guy they coined that phrase for long before Stern got into radio. He's made a long career of shocking and offending people, and been well paid for doing so. It's strange that those sponsors, who knew his reputation for diarrhea of the mouth well before signing his paychecks for years, suddenly got all righteous and perturbed when the target became people of color, which isn't even a first for Imus. What changed over the nearly 40 years that he's been on the radio was the public's perception of what he says, in a PC world it no longer pays to be controversial, gawd forbid you might offend somebody these days.
That's when the double standard comes in, Imus said nothing more or less offensive than you would hear coming from the mouths of black comedians or rappers, he just happened to time his moment rather poorly, and he isn't black. It was calling New York City "Hymietown" that cost JJ a shot at the Oval Office years ago, which he was recently reminded of in an interview, but his racist behind is still running at the mouth about what a racist Imus is. Sharpton is probably the biggest racist and white hater out there, but don't let Imus say so on the radio, next they'll take away his birthday. The real tragedy here isn't Imus' stupid choice of words, it's the fact that everyone is suddenly stripping him of his First Amendment right to be a jackass if he chooses. When the first casualty of the rampant cancer of so called "political correctness" is our Constitutionally guaranteed right to speak freely, no matter who it may offend, then we now live in an America that no longer practices what it preaches, and that's really the only crime that's been committed at all.

I never cared for the guy. I very seldom heard him say anything positive about anyone. The network kept him because they wanted a cutting -edge, controversial host. Its good for the ratings. I don't think it's so much what he said as much as who he said it about. The young women on the Rutgers team are obviously some of the best of our young individuals. They certainly don't fit the mold described by Imus. Having said that, Sharpton and Jackson are both hucksters IMO. They need to concentrate their efforts on members of their own race who denigrate their own people in a much worse manner. After all, the terms Imus used were invented by blacks, not Imus

What he did was disrespectful & in poor taste. Does anyone think the repercussions would have been the same if a black guy would have said the same thing about a team of tatted rough looking white chicks??? I coached various minority & white girls from all walks of life from the roughest inner-city girls to the silver spoon girls from the burbs for 20 years. And what you never see in the news is that it goes both ways.

Although I think that Imus had the right to say whatever he wanted as a part of his freedom of speech, MSNBC as Imus' employer had just as much of a right to fire the guy if what he was saying was not part of the material it wanted to present to its listeners (or "customers", if you will). I do feel that there is a bit of a "double standard" as has been mentioned before in this thread.
